Frequently Asked Questions about
the Cost of Sorority Membership
What is the cost of joining a sorority?  Greek organizations are quite affordable and fees go to services that will positively impact your child.  Like any International organization, there are bills to pay to ensure its proper operation.   Sororities are no different. When you become a new member, there is usually a fee paid to the International headquarters. When it is time to become a full member, there is usually a one-time fee to be paid to the International/National headquarters that covers the cost of their badge, certificate and certain other items.  For this reason, the first year costs tend to run higher.  There are also monthly or semester dues, depending on the chapter.  These fees go to keep the house (if the chapter has one) and national organization running.  Without them, the chapters could not function.  If you live in the house, there are room and board fees that are comparable to residence halls fees.  The cost per house varies. Some chapters have payment plans that can be arranged to reduce to ease the financial burden of the first year.  To find out more for your specific college, be sure to ask the College Panhellenic for their data or ask about the costs during Recruitment if they are not presented to you.

What do I do if I cannot pay my university account, in full, after Membership Recruitment or at the beginning of a semester?
This is a concern for many sorority women and one that most chapters are very aware of.  Most sororities are willing to create financial plans that meet your individual needs, whether you need to pay by month or in installments.  Most sororities also offer scholarships and awards to reward members for academic and strong leadership in the chapter, while also taking into consideration financial need.

What exactly does my money for sorority membership go for?
It varies from chapter to chapter and campus to campus.  Here are the most common places your money goes:
 Meals
 Staff salaries (cooks, housekeeping, etc.)
Maintenance (grounds keeping, improvements and remodeling to house)
 Social events and party favors
 Dues to the national organization
 Educational programming for sorority members
