Frequently Asked Questions about Sorority Recruitment
How do I join a sorority?  You can join a sorority by going through "Recruitment", previously known as "Rush".  Formal Recruitment is a series of activities that gives students a glimpse of what Greek life is all about. Recruitment gives students a chance to meet all of the sororities and also gives the sororities a chance to meet you!  At the conclusion of the formal Recruitment period, "bids" (invitations to join a sorority) are given out. On some campuses, Informal Recruitment can also take place throughout the semester.  This process is known as "C.O.B", Continuous Open Bidding.

What is Recruitment like?
Recruitment is a series of events designed to meet the women in the sororities and for them to meet you.  Recruitment events are not parties and absolutely no alcohol is served.  It is a fun way to meet many new people in a very quick way.  Think of it as an interview (or practice for interviewing).  You are trying to learn all you can in a short period of time and they are trying to learn about you.  Remember that Recruitment is a mutual selection process, much like a job interview.  By the end of the Recruitment period, you will have a much better idea which sororities are the best choice for you.  At the beginning of the Recruitment period, you will attend all functions at all sororities.  As the Recruitment period continues, the number of sororities will lessen, mutually, and you will choose between a remaining few.  The last night of Recruitment is generally called Preference because you have narrowed your choices to your preferred choices.  Our best advice for Recruitment is talk, relax and enjoy.  In college, you will meet many new people and this is only the beginning.

What are References?
Do I need them to participate in Membership Recruitment?  References are a letter of introduction from a current sorority member (alumna) written about a Potential New Member.  The letter or form tells the sorority more about your personality, academics and activities, while also attempting to introduce you to the active chapter members.  You may wish to let your neighbors, relatives, and family friends know that you are planning on participating in Membership Recruitment.  They will be able to get a form (or often a letter is sufficient) supplied by their national organization.  References, while not required, are of great benefit to the Potential New Member, for they allow the chapter to become acquainted with your before the actual Membership Recruitment Week begins.  The forms or letters are to be sent by the alumna to the sorority chapter at your chosen college.

What is a Panhellenic? The word Panhellenic means all Greek and it is the association for all Greek affiliated women.  Basically, there are three types of Panhellenics:  National Panhellenic Council (NPC), College Panhellenics and Alumnae Panhellenics.

National Panhellenic Council (NPC): Many college campuses have "national" sororities.  The 26 "national" womens' sororities are represented by the National Panhellenic Council ("NPC") and are bound to specific rules, especially about recruitment.  (Some campuses also have "local" and other ethnic sororities but they are not bound by the NPC and have their own Recruitment specific to their organizations.)

A
College Panhellenic is the governing body for all the sororities represented on their specific college campus.

An
Alumnae Panhellenic, such as Lyons Township Alumnae Panhellenic, serves in our communities to educate prospective new members about sorority membership.  In addition, alumnae write references (or letters of introduction) to their respective sorority in order to introduce prospective members from our community to the campus sorority.

Local alumnae in your area would like to write a reference for you to the college NPC sororities in advance.  In order to do so, we need you to complete the enclosed sorority information form.  EVEN if you complete the form, you are under NO obligation to register or participate in a sorority or the Recruitment process, should you change your mind.  Please
send the sorority information form by June 30 to our email box [email protected] or mail 16 copies to Carol Fletcher, 1024 Woodview Rd, Burr Ridge, IL  60527.  It is helpful to enclose a picture (photocopies are ok) also but it is not required.
