| Here are some common terms regarding Greek life.
Active: A member who has been initiated into lifelong sorority membership and is active at the collegiate level. Alumna/Alumnae: Initiated sorority members who have graduated from college. Badge: The pin of an initiated member. Bid: A formal invitation to join a particular sorority. Chapter: The campus group affiliated with a National Fraternity/Sorority. Fraternity: A Greek organization of men committed to similar ideals that develop the human spirit: leadership, scholarship, service, athletics and brotherhood. House Director/House Mom or House Parents: A person hired by the housing corporation board to live in the chapter house and supervise the day-to-day activities of the live-in members. Initiation: The formal ceremony that marks the beginning of active membership. Each chapter has a different set of requirements in order to be initiated. Legacy: A legacy is a Potential New Member who has a mother, grandmother, or sister who was a member of a sorority while in college. Legacies are often given special consideration by the chapters that their female family member(s) are affiliated with, but they are never guaranteed membership in that particular sorority. It is suggested that every woman in Membership Recruitment have an open mind toward all of our sororities. Sorority: A Greek organization of women that emphasizes leadership and personal development, banded together for education, philanthropic, civic and social purposes. Member Recruitment (previously known as Rush) : The process of mutual selection between a prospective member and an active chapter. Formal Recruitment is usually a series of highly structured events. Informal Recruitment is an informal meeting coordinated by a chapter. New Member Education: New member education is the period of learning about a particular fraternity or sorority. It follows recruitment and can last a few days or the entire semester. The average length is about six weeks. It includes programs concerning: leadership development, academic achievement, and community service. Sorority: A Greek organization of women that emphasizes leadership and personal development, banded together for education, philanthropic, civic and social purposes. |
