Background

The Southern African Linguistics and Applied Language Studies journal was first published as volume 18 in November 2000. It combines two accredited journals which have their own independent histories: the South African Journal of Linguistics (the journal of the Linguistic Society of Southern Africa - LSSA) and the Southern African Journal of Applied Language Studies (the journal of the Southern African Applied Linguistics Association - SAALA). The journal in its new guise is published by the National Inquiry Services Centre (NISC), a well-known provider of bibliographic databases. Through this new association it is anticipated that the journal will benefit from NISC's international profile and marketing initiatives.

Aim and Scope

Southern African Linguistics and Applied Language Studies publishes articles on a wide range of linguistic topics and acts as a forum for research into ALL the languages of southern Africa, including English and Afrikaans. Original contributions are welcomed on any of the core areas of Linguistics, both theoretical (e.g. syntax, phonology, semantics) and applied (e.g. sociolinguistic topics, language teaching, language policy). Review articles, short research reports and book reviews are also welcomed. Articles in languages other than English are accompanied by an extended English summary.
