Hogwarts Robes Movies I & II
Harry Potter costumes have changed since the first two movies and are looking better than ever! But due to lack of motivation I only have the robes from the first two movies. Well, what is Harry Potter? If you haven't been living under a rock for 7 years you'd know that Harry Potter is a big selling book world wide about a boy who has nothing and all of a sudden on his 11 birthday is told he is a famous wizard. Wanna know more? Read the damn books!

Instead of lecturing you on Harry Potter knowlegde lets get to the costume. The are like most any Bristish school uniform execpt the wear robes over top of them. The students all have there own house. Depending on which house you are in will determine the color and crest on your robes. The following are the colors of the houses.

  • Gryffindor - Gold & Yellow - Lion
  • Slytherin - Silver & Green - Serpent
  • Ravenclaw - Bronze & Blue - Eagle (changed to Blue and Silver and a Raven in the movies)
  • Hufflepuff - Black & Yellow - Badger

Since a blue and silver tie was easiest to find I made a Ravenclaw uniform.

How To Do It
The first thing to do with any costume is to break it down into pieces so you know what your dealing with.

* Knee Highs
* Over Shirt
* Robes
* Scarf
* Shoes
* Skirt/Pants
* Tie
* Under Shirt

Knee Highs
OK this is the simplest costume I've ever made, it was also the first. For knee highs I went to Zeller's
and bought a pair for like 5 bucks. They were really warm too.
Over Shirt
The over shirt is grey and V-necked. This maybe one of the trickier thing to buy. It might be easier to make
but I was fortunate enough to find one that was exactly what I was looking for yet sadly too big. All I had
to do was add the srtipes around the collar and the waist band.
Robes
These are a 'have' to make. I used simplicity pattern 0606 B and altered it slightly. I used black sport
material because it was cheap and you need at least 6 meters to make these robes. I shortend them because the
pattern was WAY too long, the bottom and the sleeves. The hood had to be altered as well because they had
long collars and not hood. After that it pretty much came together easily. The only thing that didn't work was
the crest. We used iron on paper and it turned out real bad. We we're in a hurry and ruined our robes. It's ok
were making new ones ;). You can also purchase them here if you would like.
Scarf
The scarf is fairly simple to make if you know how to knit. And the pattern is pretty basic too. Big
solid block of alternating house colors. If you don't know how to knit you can always purchase them here.
Shoes
Black no heel shoes that buckle over, easy as pie!
Skirt
I was yet again lucky enough to find an exact skirt like the one they use in the movies yet still a bit big
on me. It fit but it hung at the hips rather than the waist. They wear grey pleated skirt that are knee
length and the pleats are sewen down until above 1/3 down the skirt.
Tie
The tie in the movie has a simliar pattern to the scarfs you can try to make or find one or go here.
Under Shirt
This is simply a men's white work shirt which you can find ANYWHERE.
