| Jennie's Tactics 2: Large Unit Tactics | |||||||||||||||||||
| Large Unit Formations Sometimes, we get the chance to use much larger groups, for example on a day with a particularly good turnout, or when joining forces with allies. In such cases, as with the squads adopting a formation, a suitable positioning of Troopers is required. A professional warrior will naturally locate themselves in a position which is most beneficial to both themselves and the rest of the group, but others must be directed to such locations. The arrangement for a much larger, more flexible unit is shown below, and like all my tactics, revolves around common sense! |

| Apologies for the basic graphics, but it really is a very basic idea! I compare it to the formation of a soccer team, with the medical area as the goalkeeper, etc. As in a soccer team, an attacker likes to stay up front, and a goalkeeper is no good trying to score goals! And like the individual player, a Trooper in a formation must be positioned in the most effective location. Close Combat: The Brawlers and Teras Kasi Artists will be up front, bearing the brunt of the enemy's attack. Here they can cause havoc among the enemy's ranged weapon troopers and can also engage and prevent enemy melee troops from reaching the rear of the formation. Most Teras Kasi Artists have a very good 'dodge' skill and are therefore not as vulnerable as they may look in such an exposed position. Close Combat can also include Pistoleers, who can support Melee Troopers at short distances. Medium Range: Carbineers and some rifle types are used at this range. These Troopers will be engaging the enemy's front lines at range, and also eliminating enemy troops that surge forward to engage in Melee Combat. These Troopers can be quite fluid, pushing forward as the enemy retreats, or dropping back if defense of the rear lines is needed. Long Range: From the relative safety of the rear lines, our Rifle Troopers can engage and harass enemy targets. Due to the long range of their weapons, the Riflemen can remain at the rear of the formation in the prone position, without too much worry of being engaged by the enemy. They must, however, be ready to take evasive action should the front lines be broken. Medics: The green area at the rear represents the medical 'safe zone' from which the Medics will operate. The Medics will not just sit back and enjoy the show, but will be running back and forth between different parts of the unit, seeing to those that need medical attention. The Medic zone should be used to evacuate Troopers from the front line, to adminster medical aid or resuscitation. Typically the individual Medics would remain just behind the Medium Range section, engaging enemy targets when their medical skills are not needed. Note the similarities in principle of the large unit formation to the 'Tee Formation' for the four-man squad. Again the Riflemen are out wide on the flanks, with long sweeping arcs of fire. The 'point' of the formation is again made up of short and medium range troops, to drive a wedge into the enemy formation. The medics remain at the center rear to prevent from being targeted by enemy troops, and to remain equidistant to all Troopers that might need healing. This is not a rigid formation, and individuals will naturally move into different locations as they assess the battle. But it makes an organised start to the attack that will be most effective, and most devastating to the enemy. |
