FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Childfree women regularly get barraged with rude questions about their decision; the men, not so often.  Here are just a few of the most common intrusions, along with some possible answers.
1. "Why do you have to call yourselves 'childfree'?  That's so insulting!  What was wrong with 'childless'?"

Childless implies there's something wrong, something missing, something
less with my life.  That's not me.  There's nothing missing in my life, and if there were, I certainly wouldn't be looking at creating a human being to fill the void.   I can't help it if you're insulted.  I have bigger things to worry about than how you feel about how I self-identify.  But since you brought it up, I find it insulting that you see my choice to be free of something you have chosen to be so threatening.  I wonder why it bothers you so much?
2. So you don't have kids.  Why do you need a website to talk about it?

Because people who choose to be different often find comfort and camaraderie in others who've made similar decisions.  After all the rude questions and disapproving looks we get out in society, it's nice to have a place where we can get together and trade stories and information.  There are literally thousands of sites out there for parents; let us have our handful of childfree sites and stop hassling us.
3. What's with all the mean terms you people have for us?  Breeders?  Moos?  Baby Rabies?

Most subgroups have their own internal lingo (good God, look at Trekkies).  Make sure you read the definitions of those terms (see the links page) before you get your underwear in a twist.  If they still insult you after you've read them, then it's likely they're decribing you.

4. You must be pretty selfish to not want kids.  Who's going to take care of you when you're old?

This is one of those statements that no one sees the irony in.  You're the one breeding your own elder care and
I'm selfish?  Besides, how is not wanting children any more selfish than wanting them?  Either way, you're giving yourself the lifestyle you want.  The truth is, in a recent survey of couples by two psychologists, 100% of the reasons given for having children were selfish reasons; of the reasons given for not wanting children, only 38% were selfish. 5. My kid's going to be taking care of you when you're old and in a nursing home!

Right, so I guess that means I'll be paying his salary, so....you're welcome!
6. Why are so many of you people against fertility treatments, IVF, etc?

Because we find it the height of selfishness and hubris to ignore all the poor, starving children in the world and spend tens of thousands of dollars on the slim chance of creating another one.  Oh, that's right,
those kids don't have your superior DNA.

"If motherhood doesn't interest you, don't do it. It didn't interest me, so I didn't do it. Anyway, I would have made a terrible parent. The first time my child didn't do what I wanted, I'd kill him." -Katherine Hepburn
