Hosted by the Lotus in the Desert Sangha September 30th, October 1-2 2005

Join us for a weekend mindfulness meditation retreat. Vipassana or insight meditation practice calms the mind and penetrates the nature of reality through present moment awareness. Liberating oneself from emotional entanglements creates strength and stability while opening to truth, beauty and integrity.

The retreat is open to those familiar and new to meditation. Each day will begin with Yoga or Chi Gong and will include instruction in sitting and walking meditation as well as talks by Lucinda on the process and benefits of meditation.

Lucinda Green is the president and founder of Rocky Mountain Insight (RMI). She has been a student of eastern meditation since 1968. Lucinda began the practice of vipassana meditation in 1975 as part of her professional training as a mind/body integrative therapist. In addition, she studied at the Nyingma Institute (Tibetan Buddhist) in Berkley and created the Buddhist womens Sangha in 1982. Her teachers have included Munindra, U Silananda, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Pema Chödrön, Thich Nhat Hahn, Rina Sircar and Christopher Titmus. VIPASSANA RETREATS

Retreats are designed for both beginning and experienced meditators. Daily instruction in meditation and nightly dhamma talks by the teacher are given, and individual or group interviews are arranged with the teacher at regular intervals. The entire day is spent in silent meditation practice with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation. The combination of this regular schedule, the silence, group support, and daily instructions provides a beneficial environment for developing and deepening meditation practice. Complete silence is maintained at all times except during teacher interviews and question/answer periods. Beginners are encouraged to be present from the start of the retreat to receive initial instructions. To gain the most benefit, participants are encouraged to attend the full retreat.

METTA (Loving Kindness) RETREAT

The practice of loving kindness teaches us to love unconditionally. We learn to open our hearts and to be loving and accepting toward ourselves and others. With practice we can develop a radiant, kind heart. The practice of loving kindness also provides the foundation for the development of compassion, joy and equanimity. Loving kindness is a powerful practice and can change how we view the world.

DANA

Dana is a generosity offering to the teacher. (All suggested donations for registration fees are used for the retreat expenses.) It is central to this tradition that the students support the teacher with a donation. There is no set amount, but you are encouraged to give generously to the extent you are able. Dana is totally voluntary. A box will be available at the retreat for Dana donations to the teacher.

REGISTRATION

Further information regarding retreat site, times and other details will be sent after you register.

Non-residential retreats begin with check-in at 6:30 pm Friday, Saturday from 9 am-5 pm (or 9 pm) and Sunday 9 am to 2 pm (or 4 pm). (Times can vary with each retreat). Full payment is due at the time of registration. Plan to arrive each day 30 min. before starting time to register each day.

Scholarships: Inability to pay should not prevent you from attending, as there are some funds set aside for this purpose.

"Cultivating the Mind Of Love And Peace"
A Weekend Vipassana Meditation Retreat with Richard Shankman November 5-7, 2004

Join us for a weekend of mindfulness meditation using present moment awareness as a practice to develop strength, serenity, and liberating insight for the transformation of self and society. Looking within and learning from self opens the door for extending love and peace to your community, the world, and interrelated nature of all beings. The practice of sitting and walking meditation, paves the way for our place in life. Although life is not without strife, through love, reconciliation, and peace, we can participate in a world in which we all want to live.

Richard Shankman has 25 years of meditation experience and is certified by the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leader Training Program. Richard is a co-founder of the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies ( www.sati.org ) and teaches regularly at four San Francisco meditation groups. Richard has been instrumental in starting a meditation program in the San Mateo County Jail system. He has been a facilitator with the Alternatives to Violence Project for about six years, presenting three-day workshops primarily in San Quentin State Prison, and in the community. He recently returned from a yearlong retreat at Insight Meditation Society.

Suggested donation: $50 for the weekend and $25 for a day ($10 discount for students)
