LEAVING THE VIEWER TO MAKE UP HIS MIND.
Mason was from Philadelphia correct? as was Lovett?
If I was a coin collector and a local coin engraver died
and there was an estate sale, I would most likely be present .
Possible that Mason obtained materials to create the dies from
from Lovetts estate, even before he spoke with Taylor?
my opinion using materials used to make the dies in 1861,
to make Restrikes in 1879..
The rediscovery of half dollar coin came after the creator Lovett
passed on. Questionable acquisition of the coin and subsequent
change of ownership from Taylor to Mason.
In my opinion, Mason acquired Lovett's die making tools
and notes prior to Lovetts death.
I do not believe that Taylor release his coin to Mason.
using acquired Lovett's lettering stamps to create Masons coin.
This is supported by the added loops, and 2 extra blooms, and the changed
size, from 28 to 30 mm. This would also be supported by the
US Liberty image being used as a viable replacement for the specialized
Liberty used on Taylor's coin.
In my opinion, proof, Mason created the coins the coins are the missing
L and M engravings that could only be reproduce by Lovett.
I think, Maybe the reason the ANS rejected his, sale offer.
I will continue to look but the Records Keeper

Not until 1879 was it revealed by Dr.Taylor to the world ,
by his owning a specimen.
***"ACCORDING TO MASONS ACCOUNT.FROM NEWSPAPER ARTICLE"***
After an article appeared in the Philadelphia Public Record,
January 2, 1879,
B.F. Taylor, M.D., of New Orleans, contacted E.L. Mason, Jr.,
a Philadelphia coin dealer,
to say Taylor had an original 1861 Confederate States
of America half dollar.
He stated that four examples had been coined,
that he had one,
was given another, another went to Professor Biddle
of the University of Louisiana,
and one to Dr. Ames of New Orleans".
"Sir,I had a Confederate coin,
it was in my wife's trunk when it was
rifled by the Federal Officers
She on board the prison ship on which
she was detained at Hampton Roads
before and after my confinement
in Fortress Monroe.
The coin, some medals & other valuables
were stolen at that time, whether the coin
be the same which has been offered
to you as a duplicate I cannot say,
it is however not true as published
that it is now in my possession.
Regretting that I cannot give you
more exact information
on particular subject of your enquiry
I am Respectfully, Jefferson Davis"
"He ordered that new designs for half-dollars,
should be submitted.
Among several sent, and only one was approved .
When Louisiana seceded , it immediately aligned
with five other states .
Five states ratified the Provisional Constitution
Confederate States of America.
March 11, 1861 the final Constitution
Confederate States America was ratified by seven states,
original six , then Texas .
National Archives reveal that the mint
superintendent Elmore, was not never under the control
of Louisiana officials,
but rather the direction of ***C. G. Memminger; ***
Secretary of the Treasury for the
Confederate States of America.
The mint was under Confederate control,
all the time, from the very beginning.

d passage through the collar was assured. Problems with
planchets sticking to the die
would be confined to the high relief
and reverse die.
Taylor kept one and passed one, on to a government
offical by his letter.
We assume it went to Memminger, SINCE HE ORDERED IT MADE,
The other two pieces were given to Riddle(Biddle), and Ames.

THE ORGINAL FROM N.O., WOULD NOT FIT

Some say due to high relief,

federal haves 30 mm.
SO THEY USED THE CORKSCREW HAND PRESS.
IF THEY WOULD NOT FIT ON A COINING PRESS
THEIR SIZE WAS DIFFERENT, 28 mm.

containing a crack running from the coin's rim to
Liberty's nose and passing near the seventh star.
This can be attributed to the Confederacy's
control of the mint,
because this cracked die was used for the
four Confederate half dollars.
In 1861, Memminger ok'd a design for
the Confederate half dollar.
No government engravers worked in the New Orleans Mint,
the branch received dies produced by the Philadelphia Mint.
Although lacking engravers, the Confederate government,
eager to assert its self-sufficiency, WANTED ITS OWN COIN,ITS SIZE
DIFFERENT AND BOTH SIDES THEIR OWN DESIGN.
"I will take pleasure in sending you
a specimen for the archives you represent.
Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
requests from Taylor, not being in the records as a request, forget about
the answer and request letter, they have no record of the requests,
ever being made.
Another flaw picked up by mr. corell's keen mind,
the 13 states in descripition, not even existing when coin was made.
He is a gentlemen, and gives the other side of story,
it may refer to 13 colonies, it does not say so.
Also how the coin was distributed "
In a true patterning of a new coin, several specimens
would likely have gone to key government officials in Montgomery.
The majority of coins would not likely have gone to private individuals,
as was the case here."
IS THE TIME LINE.

the US obverse die

Following the production of these four coins,
a regular US reverse die

As a result, while numismatists
can not distinguish among double eagles
