Supporting Characters from FY
Name: Keisuke Yuuki
Birthday: 1/3
Age: 20
Height: 180cm ~ 5'11"
Blood Type: B
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown
Seiyuu: Miki Shin'ichirou
Keisuke is Miaka’s older brother. He is a college student majoring in ancient Chinese philosophy. When Miaka gets released from the book and Yui takes her place, she tells Keisuke her story. Although he doesn’t believe her, he warns her to stay away from the book. Later, Keisuke sees Miaka out on the street and wonders where she’s going. He goes to the library and catches her just as she is returning into the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho". Realizing Miaka was telling the truth, he picks up the book and begins to read about her and Yui’s stories.
Keisuke is cheerful and outgoing, like Miaka, and he is also very protective of her. He and Tetsuya run all over the countryside trying to find out as much as they can about the book to find a way to get Miaka and Yui out. He is also very romantic (not in the lovey-dovey sense) in that he thinks what Miaka and the Suzaku Seishi are doing is heroic and brave. He especially thinks Tamahome, his sister’s protector, is cool ^_^. He is also very sensitive, unashamed to shed tears in heart-rending situations.
Name: Kajiwara Tetsuya
Birthday: 9/21
Age: 20
Height: 179cm ~ 5'10"
Blood Type: B
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown
Seiyuu: Narita Ken
Tetsuya is Keisuke’s best friend and schoolmate. Tetsuya gets mixed up with Keisuke’s problem when they run into each other at the library. Somehow, Keisuke starts to believe that Miaka and Yui are in the book and does what he can to help find out more info on the book’s history. Tetsuya continues to read the book while Keisuke researches the four gods. For some reason, Tetsuya is always wearing his sunglasses, but he is pretty cool guy (and without them, I think he looks like the rest of the guys). He eventually develops affections for Yui, which are carried through to the OAV series where he and Yui are a couple.
Name: Taiitsu-kun
Taiitsu-kun is an omniscient guardian of the bookworld. She is the one who gave each country their own copy of the “Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho” long, long ago. She is also extremely powerful (likes to use mirrors to distribute/use her powers) and lives on Mount Taikyoku, a mountain in the center of where the four countries came together, and which appears as nothing more than barren rocky cliffs to those who are unpure of heart. She appears as a very old woman (which is understandable considering her age) but is very wise and generous, especially to those she believes in. She aids Miaka and the Suzaku Seishi along their journey, offering wise and encouraging advice as well as some powerful additives to their own powers.
Name: Nyan-nyan
Nyan-nyans are magical little girls who live on Mount Taikyoku and aid Taiitsu-kun. They can heal injuries and are very enthusiastic to help. They are most helpful at the end of the series when they allow the four Suzaku Seishi who had lost their lives to return and aid Miaka in the final battle.
Name: Koji
Age: 19
Hair Color: Blue
Eye Color: Green?
Seiyuu: Seki Tomokazu
Koji is a hilarious and brave young man who becomes leader of the Mt. Leiraku bandits after Tasuki leaves to join Miaka’s Seishi. He is Genrou’s best friend, although Koji didn’t like him at first. When they first met, he thought Genrou was an annoying kid, but Genrou soon grew in height and skills, eventually making him Koji’s equal. Like Tasuki, despite his occupation, he is a loyal and noble character. He is an excellent fighter and later shows up with his whole troop of bandits to aid Konan in their war against Kutou. He has a hilarious habit of carrying on a conversation with himself when making an entrance. Koji is a *very* cool guy ^_^
Name: Shoka
Shoka came from the same village as Mitsukake, known as Myojuan. The two were in love and, together, helped to heal and aid the sick. But she fell ill one day while he was away and he couldn’t return in time to save her. Her body was possessed by a demon called the Shikkonki. It allowed her to live on with the power to control the dead. With this ability, she infected the people of the village with the same disease she had died from and after they died, she would pretend to revive them when in actuality, she was controlling them herself. Myojuan moved out of the village, overcome with grief that he could not save the life of the one he wanted to save the most. When he is informed by Hotohori that Shoka lived and Miaka was in her care, he came out of recluse and exorcised the demon, freeing Shoka’s soul.
Name: Houki
Houki becomes Hotohori’s wife and the Empress of Konan. Hotohori married Houki sometime after Nuriko’s final battle on the snowy mountain and before Miaka’s return to Konan. Houki is very kind and gentle, and loves Hotohori with all of her heart. He believes it was Nuriko who brought them together, which is curious as Houki looks almost exactly like Nuriko. When everyone first meets her, they think she is Nuriko so the men run scared that she’s Nuriko’s spirit and Miaka rushes to hug her, discovering that Houki has something Nuriko did not—breasts ^_^. At the end of the seires, Houki is pregnant with Hotohori’s son, Boushin, fifth emperor of Konan. In the OAV series, Houki is so overcome with grief over Hotohori’s death that she has taken to her bed, refusing to leave her room. When Miaka enters the room to speak with her, she is shocked to find Hotohori’s spirit sitting beside his wife, caressing her face. Taka (Tamahome’s reincarnation) allows Hotohori to use his body to briefly reunite with Houki and to hold his son for the first time.
New Characters from the OAV series:
Name: Tenkou
Tenkou was Nakago’s master, a powerful spirit who believes himself a god. He is the King of the Shitennou (Four Heaven Kings), who do his bidding while he is in exile, locked away by the four beast gods. Tenkou aspires to rule both the book world and the real world. Long ago, he was once a Japanese prince who was given the “Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho” by the Emperor Tao. When he discovered the vast powers of the book, he desired to control it himself, practicing the dark arts for which he was punished. Tenkou was eventually put to death, but his vengeful spirit remained and grew more and more powerful. The four gods locked him away in the Pin Tree Burial Mound in an attempt to control him. Miaka and Taka eventually make the ultimate sacrifice to stop him, calling upon the four gods once again to banish him away forever.
Name: Cho Rokou
Rokou is Nuriko’s older brother. When he learned of Nuriko’s death, he couldn’t deal with having lost his second and last sibling. He is haunted by the knowledge that Nuriko’s body lay underneath the snow alone in the a foreign country. He doesn’t have the strength of character that Nuriko had, always having to be protected by his younger brother. He refused to turn over Nuriko’s crystal ball that he had played with as a child to the Suzaku Seishi, blaming them for Nuriko’s death. Unbeknownst to him, the ball held Taka’s fourth memory stone. It isn’t until he is able to accept that Nuriko’s death was honorable and good that he has the strength to let go of the orb, and open up to people again.
Name: Hikou
Hikou was Chichiri’s best friend who fell in love with Chichir’s fiancé, Kouran. He kissed her once and unfortunately, Chichiri caught them. Kouran then told Chichiri that she could no longer marry him but didn’t explain that it was because she was so ashamed of betraying him that she didn’t feel good enough for him anymore. Chichiri thought she was choosing Hikou over him. The two friends got into a fight during a huge flood. Hikou falls into the river and Chichiri tried to hold on but something struck him in the eye and he let go. Hikou was washed away by the rapid tide and killed and Chichiri was left with a permanent reminder of what he’d done. Tenkou somehow gets a hold of his spirit and persuades Hikou to return to get revenge on Chichiri.
Hikou is given some sort of water magic that takes away people’s inhibitions, making them do things they normally wouldn’t. He goes after Tasuki first, making Tasuki act on emotions he certainly wouldn’t have in good conscience. Tasuki tries to take Miaka for himself, angered at how Taka always seems to make her cry. He overcomes it, though, because his love for his friends was stronger. Then he kidnaps Miaka, telling Chichiri to come after him. Chichiri does, and somehow manages to hold down Hikou, yelling for Tasuki to kill them both with his Tessen. This was an incredibly touching moment in which Chichiri promises his friend that this time, he wouldn’t be alone. However, Taka bravely pulls Chichiri away before he can be killed. Through the strength of their friendship, they finally put their conflict to rest and Hikou’s soul is finally at peace.
Name: Yosui
Yosui is the last of the ShiTennOu. Somehow, Tenkou had gotten hold of all of Tamahome’s memory stones and put them into Yosui, thus turning Yosui into Tamahome. No one realizes Tamahome is really Yosui until Taka has already returned to the real world and Miaka suddenly realizes that something is wrong with Tamahome. She returns to the real world to Taka. They return to fight, of course, and a battle ensues in which Tamahome fights with Taka, sending an energy blast that Miaka jumps in front of, effectively getting herself killed. Taka then comes to some sort of realization and accepts Yosui as a part of himself that he’d lost. He absorbs Yosui into himself and becomes the true Tamahome reincarnation.
This part confuses me a bit, but here goes: Miaka dies and after Taka absorbs Yosui, he surrenders his body to be with Miaka. Somehow, because of their love, they are able to summon the Suzaku and defeat Tenkou for good. Taiitsu-kun then allows them to be placed back into their physical bodies, but gives them the choice of living in the book world or the real world. At first Miaka chooses the book world, but everyone else knows she belongs in her own world, so they are sent back to the real world with their friends’ blessings.
In the Eikoden, they get married and have a baby boy!
Name: Kamishiro Miiru
Miiru appears as a freshman at the college Taka, Keisuke, and Tetsuya attend. She joins Keisuke’s Ancient Chinese Mythology club and learns about the “Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho,” immediately believing Keisuke when he tells her his little sister was once pulled into it. She is actually Ren’s older sister and can plant parasites in the blood, or make dolls out of blood, using them to control the person the blood came from or manipulate them. Her story is the same as Ren’s, eventually being killed again, this time by Tenkou.
Name: Shigyou Ren
Ren appears as a new student at Miaka and Yui’s high school. He is immediately popular, running and winning student president. He controls the students, who are weak in mind and will, turning them against Miaka, Yui, and Taka. He is actually Tenkou’s first shitennou. Tenkou persuaded his spirit to come back and work for him. He agreed only if his sister could join them. Tenkou has a knack for bringing back unrestful spirits (such as Tomo’s). According to what I’ve read, Ren and his sister, Miiru had an incestuous realationship, for which they were punished by death. Ren is eventually killed (again) by Tenkou for failing.
Name: Boushin
Boushin is Hotohori and Houki’s son, the crowned prince and fifth emperor of Konan. Boushin first appears as only a year or so old, but has never spoken a word because his mother is still in mourning over Hotohori’s death. He is a very active little boy and loves the teddy bear Miaka gave Hotohori before leaving for Hokkan on their search for the shinzaho. When Taka allows Hotohori to use his body to embrace his son, Boushin learns of his father’s love and speaks for the first time. Boushin also carried within him the third of Taka’s memory stones, the one that would have been in Hotohori’s possession.
Eikoden
Name: Mayo Sakaki
Mayo appears in Eikoden. She is a student with a humongous crush on Taka, who is one of her basketball coaches (Keisuke is the other one). She is angry and crushed when Miaka and Taka marry and through some twist of fate, she comes into possession of the “Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho.” She reads the book in about an instant, flooded with images of the book’s events and the story of Miaka and her Seishi. She wants to go into the book so that Taka will come in after her and fall in love with her as he did Miaka. Going into the book, she suddenly finds SHE is pregnant with Miaka and Taka’s baby and Miaka, in the real world, is lying in a coma in the hospital NOT pregnant. Taka is forced to return to the book world where he meets up with the other two surviving members of the Suzaku Seishi, Tasuki and Chichiri. The three team up to find the other four seishi, reincarnated into their chosen forms.
Mayo becomes the pawn of a fake Suzaku, feeding off her anger and negative energy. When she learns she has been used, she is guilt-ridden with how horrible she’d been acting. She discovers she is disappearing and her depression drives her to attempt to drown herself. We learn that her destructive behavior is the result of her parents’ divorce which had deeply hurt her, leaving her feeling alone and abandoned. In the end, the joined forces of the Suzaku Seishi, all seven reunited again, and Miaka’s strength fused with Mayo’s is enough to defeat the false gods and restore the book world. Mayo, of course, repents and becomes good friends with Miaka.
