Nyosei Island
I discovered while reading a section on
Tomo no Miko’s page that Nyosei is an island within the world of the book. According to what I’ve read, Nyosei is an island populated exclusively by women. Any men who happen to stray into their country would end up in one of three predicaments (none of which were up to him, of course):
| 1. Be killed as a warning for others. |
| 2. Be killed and used in wine or other useful products. |
| 3. Have his eyes cut out and be used as a breeder for the women. |
Apparently, the entire part of the manga that included Nyosei was cut from the anime, probably because of the subject matter.
So, where does Nyosei come into the story, you ask? Well, according to what I read, Miaka and the others happen to discover Nyosei during her journey to Hokkan (which is plausable as they were traveling by ship) to find the Genbu shinzaho. Chiriko is the one who realizes where they are and tells the others to dress as women. Because Chiriko is only super intelligent when his seishi symbol appears (a fact from the manga that was completely ignored in the anime), when his symbol disappeared, he forgot why they had to disguise themselves. Humorous and strange occurrences ensue.

| Mitsukake, making an ugly woman, is immediately recognized as a man and captured. |
| Tamahome and Miaka share a room (b/c they’re both supposed to be women). |
| Tamahome gets hit on by a Nyosei woman. |
. . . and so on. ^_^
Interestingly enough, this part of the manga was re-imagined as omakes at the end of the first OAV series. The seiryuu seishi and the suzaku seishi are all traveling in two buses to an all-women’s resort and must dress as women to get in. Following the Nyosei story, Mitsukake is recognized as a man and captured. Departing from the storyline, the rest of the guys decide to reveal themselves when they discover Mitsukake will be used as a breeding stud ^_^ It was actually really hilarious and nice reprieve from the drama of the OAV’s.
