Genbu: God of the North

Genbu no Miko: Takiko Okudo
Takiko was the first girl to be taken into the book (as far as we know). She became the Genbu no Miko two hundred years before Miaka and Yui’s time (according to the book’s timeline). Her father, Okuda Einosuke, had found the book on his travels in China and had returned with it to Japan to translate it. So absorbed in its translation that he didn’t even take the time to say good-bye to his wife, Takiko’s mother, as she died, Takiko took the book from him in anger. The next thing she knew, she was surrounded by the snowy landscape of Hokkan. She didn’t really choose to become the Genbu no Miko, she was simply given the title, and even then, she considered it more of her taking someone else’s role rather than seeing herself as the real Genbu no Miko.
Takiko succeeded in summoning Genbu and joined with him so that she could use his powers to grant her three wishes. Her first wish she used to protect Hokkan from the warring forces of Kutou. Her second wish she used to get home, but when she returned to her world, she was in terrible pain, being devoured by Genbu inside her. Okuda Einosuke, instead of watching his daughter die in terrible pain, killed her to ease her passage and then took his own life. It was this incident that Keisuke and Tetsuya looked up in the library that led them to Oosugi Suzuno. Einosuke, unable to destroy the book, left it in the possession of his close friend, Takao Oougi, father of Suzuno, which was how, some years later, Suzuno was pulled into the book to become the Byakko no Miko.
Takiko had to be a brave and intelligent girl if she succeeded in gathering the Genbu Seishi and summoning the beast god. She also had to have gained their respect if two of her warriors remained for two hundred years as spirits to guard her shinzaho, a necklace she wore during the summoning ceremony, until the time when Miaka and the Suzaku Seishi appeared to retrieve it.
Because she appeared in the book so long before Miaka’s time, little is known about her true adventures. However, that is all becoming clear as Watase Yuu is working on her story as we speak! The story is unfolding for us loyal fans.

Hikitsu is one of the Genbu Seishi, although little is known about him (for now). He plays a very small part in the anime when Miaka and Suzaku Seishi enter the cave in which the shinzaho is protected. Hikitsu appears with Tomite, two spirits who have remained loyally protecting their Miko’s shinzaho two hundred years after her departure. Despite being a spirit, his Seishi powers were still powerful, able to hold off Tamahome and Tasuki’s attacks. However, he was honest and noble in that once Miaka proved her worth, he and Tomite allowed them passage.
From what I’ve heard, Hikitsu and Tomite were the first to die of the Genbu Seishi. Hikitsu and Tomite had made a pact to be as brothers once their duty to Genbu no Miko was completed. However, during a battle with Kutou, Tomite ran out into the midst of the battle to rescue a childe. Hikitsu ran after him to protect them, but both he and Tomite were struck and killed by the enemy. Because of their loyalty to their Miko and because they died before their duties were fulfilled, they dedicated their spirits to protecting the shinzaho on Mount Black. It’s wonderful when the two warriors can finally rest in peace.

Tomite appears in Miaka’s story the same time Hikitsu does. More is known about him, however, because he is the second of the Genbu Seishi to appear in the Genbu Kaiden series. Tomite is a little young and headstrong, but isn’t entirely reckless. He and Hikitsu had a strong bond that endured even unto death. They were the first of the Genbu Seishi to die, but stayed behind to protect Takiko’s shinzaho. After two hundred years, they finally relinquished their precious treasure to Miaka and were free.
Tomite is the second of the Genbu Seishi Takiko meets after her arrival in the bookworld. He tries to kill Uruki, or Rimudo, who is wanted for killing many people, although he is also a fellow Seishi. Tomite eventually "kidnaps" Takiko thinking Rimudo will return to save her. Instead, Tomite discovers she is the Genbu no Miko and must protect her.

Uruki is the first of the Genbu Seishi Takiko meets. He is present when she first arrives in the book. He's chained and surrounded by a number of monsters, which he kills with his wind powers. Strange thing, though, is that he's a woman! He faints with a fever and Takiko manages to go the short distance it takes to get to the nearest town. They take up at an inn and they fall asleep together. But the next thing she knows, she's awake and next to a man! She freaks out, but before she knows it, his mark on his chest begins to glow and he's a woman again!
Uruki is a complex character because he is estranged from his father for reasons still unclear, so estranged in fact that his father is sending assassins to kill him. He is also wanted for killing hundreds of people with his wind abilities, which was why he was chained on top of the mountain to be killed by the monsters when Takiko appeared. Uruki is still fighting his position as a Genbu Seishi, and joins sides with Kutou under an alias. Still, despite his resistance, he still stands up and protects Takiko against her enemies as a woman before hurrying back to the Kutou camp as his male self.
Uruki is one character I am definitely looking forward to learning more about!

Hatsui is the third of the Genbu Seishi Takiko meets. He is a boy who accidentally killed some villagers when they were bullying him because he could not yet control his powers. He escapes and hides in a ruined temple, his only friend a girl named Phen. Phen is actually a spy sent by an unknown enemy to kill the Seishi but she could not get close to him because he would protect himself with the needles. So she pretended to be his friend, telling him whenever someone happened by that they were enemies and for him to kill them. She tried to turn Hatsui against Takiko, Uruki, and Tomite as well, but Takiko's kindness got through to him and he finally left the cage he had occupied for the two years since the incident in the village.
