The JAM Online will have a new home by the fall. Keep an eye on this space and on The JAM On Facebook for details.

The JAM

Welcome to The JAM Online (TJO), The JAM's home in cyberspace. Throughout its 17-year existence, The JAM has grown from a humble softball game played by a collection of recent high school graduates in Yonkers, New York, to a social phenomenon involving an annual softball game and picnic, random sideshows and contests featuring everything from the sublime to the absurd, and various other JAM-related events throughout the year.

Each year a steadily increasing number of friends, acquaintances, spouses, progeny, business colleagues, professional athletes, celebrities, foreign dignitaries, political and religious leaders, and people we don't even know (at last count, 189) have experienced the growing legend of The JAM. Okay, all right, so some of that is a bold-faced lie. So far. We don't care about that. What we do care about is that The JAM continues to expand its legacy and fulfill its mission of bringing people together throughout the 21st Century and beyond.

BLASTERS KEEP ROLLING

Relentless attack produces eighth straight win

YONKERS, N.Y. (August 15, 2009) -- Their run has been unstoppable. Saturday, the Blasters couldn't be stopped from scoring runs.

The Blasters won their eighth consecutive JAM, scoring runs in all but two innings to defeat the Patches 23-9 at The Bailout JAM at Cook Field.

Six runs in the first, all but one scored with two out, put the Patches in a deep, early hole.

The top of the Blasters' order did much of the damage -- Keith Emmer, R.T. McShane, George McShane and Mike Campoli each had at least three hits -- but the bottom of the order kept rallies alive or sparked them.

Captain Chris Crowley, named Most Valuable JAMmer for the first time, legged out an infield hit, typical of the onslaught.

Late-arriving "Big Fish" was named Rookie of the Year. The absent Brad Sherman was hit with the Steve Testa Memorial Award for softest JAM performance.

Mike Ozga had three hits for the Patches, who cut the lead to 9-5 with a four-run fifth but came no closer.

R.T. McShane wins Home Run Derby

YONKERS, N.Y. (August 15, 2009) -- Few JAMmers could reach the fence Saturday at Cook Field, but R.T. McShane cleared them four times to win the inaugural JAM Home Run Derby.

McShane and John Licht each homered once in the first round, in which 10 JAMmers took part. Each player had eight outs -- non-home-runs -- to notch as many home runs as he could, but Licht and McShane were the only players to clear the four-foot barricade.

Each homered once again in the second round, which was set to be the final. In a playoff, McShane homered twice to left field; Licht homered once.

The fence was a new addition. Designed to evoke the Polo Grounds' dimensions, it was set 240 feet from home plate down the lines and jutted out to 270 feet in straightaway center, with a cutout at the deepest part, much like the Polo Grounds' path to the clubhouses.

No player homered in the game itself for the first time since 2006. McShane and Joe Licht both cleared the fence on a hop for ground-rule doubles.

Hungry? Have a sandwich

YONKERS, N.Y. (August 15, 2009) -- JAM rookie Dave Arena gave the Patches one win Saturday: His barbecued pork sandwich narrowly beat out recipes from Mike Campoli and Jag Bath to claim the title in the JAM's pork sandwich contest.

Arena's sandwich earned nine points from the judges. Bath's and Campoli's received eight apiece.

The contest honored a similar celebration held each August in Campli, Teramo, Abruzzo, Italy, the "Sagra della Porchetta del Mondo," or "Feast of Porks of the World."

Bath came a point away from a second consecutive victory in JAM concoction contests. His JAMmie Dodger became the official cocktail of The JAM last year.

Gourdine, George McShane were Blasters' free agents

YONKERS, N.Y. (August 4, 2009) -- Blasters captain Chris Crowley announced Tuesday that George McShane and Kevin Gourdine have signed with the team as free agents. The duo played together on the victorious Blasters in each of the past two JAMs.

McShane has been MVJ three times, most recently in 2006. Since rejoining the Blasters in 2005, McShane has gone 9-for-15 with seven runs and seven RBIs; he has been the game's winning pitcher three times in those four years.

Gourdine has hit .750 since joining the Blasters in 2007. He was chosen JAM Rookie of the Year in 2007, going 2-for-3; his 4-for-5, two-home-run performance last year made him a top candidate for MVJ.

The Bailout JAM is scheduled for Aug. 15.

Fear not: TJO will live

TJO staff has been informed of the impending demise of Geocities. We have sought another free site to host TJO into the future, and a suitable candidate has been found, though ideas about other options are welcome.

When Geocities closes, we hope a signpost will be available here to redirect traffic to the new site. Failing that, check out TJO's home on Facebook for updates, as well as the JAMBoard.

The namesake of the LORD TWON JAM CUP is former NBA player Antoine "Big Dog" Carr. The Cup was named for Carr because, simply, Antoine Carr is amazing. Some will remember our original URL was http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/4255 -- think that #55 in the URL was just a coincidence?
