Volunteer Opportunities
What makes Long Island Crisis Center so special is that volunteers deliver the service.  With a small administrative staff, and over 150 volunteers, there are many opportunities available to you.

- People of all ages and backgrounds volunteer at Long Island Crisis Center.
- You do not need previous experience.  The center provides free and comprehensive training.
- All volunteers make a commitment to volunteer six hours per week as well as to stay at the center for six months after  
  the training is completed.  High School students need only commit to three hours per week.
- All hours are flexible and can be scheduled to fit your own needs.
- A limited number of field placements and internships are also available.
Counselor Assistants
You will begin as an assistant to the hotline counselors.  As a counselor assistant, you will answer the business phones to provide information about Long Island Crisis Center to callers.  In addition, you will aid hotline counselors with referrals and greet walk-in clients.

Outreach Workers
As a volunteer outreach worker, you will visit area schools, health fairs, and community events to educate youth and families about the services of Long Island Crisis Center.

Crisis Counselors
All of Long Island Crisis Center's hotlines are answered by volunteer counselors.  The center is widely recognized for its expertise in crisis intervention counseling training.  You will receive training about a variety of current issues affecting youth and families such as:

- Adolescent development and depression
- Alcohol and drug abuse
- Domestic violence
- Child abuse
- Eating disorders
- Family communication
- Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgendered/Questioning youth  concerns
- Sexual assault
- Sexuality, birth control, pregnancy concerns
- Suicide prevention

You will find that you will continue to use these skills and knowledge learned at Long Island Crisis Center in every phase of your personal and professional life.
