Our services include a 24-hour crisis intervention hotline service, a new Internet counseling service, a suicide outreach program, a countywide runaway hotline, community based educational programs, and a supportive program and coffeehouse for lebian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and questioning youth. We are proud that our programs address some of the most critical concerns of our society: teen suicide, depression, substance abuse, pregnancy, rape, sexual assault, child abuse, runaway and homeless youth, sexual identity, and AIDS/HIV prevention. Our programs have served as models for other organizations around the country. This agency has a long history of doing pioneering work and responding to community needs long before they become "fashionable." For example, in 1979 Long Island Crisis Center originated one of the first adolescent depression and suicide prevention programs in the country. We currently run the first funded program on Long Island to provide services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth under the name "Pride for Youth," and have the only suicide outreach hotline service in the New York metropolitan area. Our Internet counseling service for Long Island residents is the first FREE counseling service of its kind in the country. In September 2002, Long Island Crisis Center became one of only a handful of crisis centers in the state to be certified by the American Association of Suicidology. This certification is in recognition of the work we do around Suicide Prevention. WORLD TRADE CENTER TRAGEDY COUNSELING All of us have been affected by the horrors of September 11th. People report difficulty sleeping, bouts of depression, inability to concentrate, and anxiety about the future. "We know that there are may people who are very worried, who can't sleep, who are suffering from anxiety and fear," says Linda Leonard, the director of the Crisis Center, "and we are here to help." The original mission of Middle Earth was to provide crisis intervention services to Long Island youth with substance abuse problems. Its services have been extended to address many unmet needs of Long Islanders. |
