Only Lloyd...

THIS PAGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ASYLUM TIMES ITSELF.

Allow me to explain. Being the webmaster, I can put anything I like (as long as it's legal) on this site. I am now in my third year of a Chemistry Degree at the Univerity of Sussex.

Having a humourous and twisted mind, in the last few years I have discovered a variety of terms used in various branches of chemistry which, in my opinion, are a bit suspect. Read on and see if you agree.

SOME TERMS FROM ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Backside Attack

Aromatic Ring

Ring Closure

Ether Cleavage

Brown Ring Test

Upjohn Conditions

Ring Opening

Excited State

Ring Strain

SOME TERMS FROM ORGANOMETALLIC CHEMISTRY

Wacker Process

Contact Process

Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerisation (ROMP)

Ligand Insertion

Ky Pathway

Back Bonding / Back Donation

Some terms from Materials Science:

F-centre

Frenkel Pair

Forbidden Gap

Penetration Depth

Hole Doping

Flux Penetration

Cooper Pair

Attractive Interaction

MORE NONSENSE

OK, so maybe I do have a sick mind, but I dare anyone to do a chemistry degree and not find these things amusing.

PS: Owen, if you are looking at this page, I have discovered that in chemistry there is the Hargreaves Process, but I have yet to find a Muncaster process. (Although there is an institution in Cumbria called Muncaster Castle!)

The University of Bristol also has a page like this, about Molecules with Silly Names. A molecule exists called the Arsole. Don't believe me? Then visit it!
