Introduction

Welcome to the crazy world of St Christopher School!

Slideshow!

This website exists for two reasons; the amusement of the world at large, and more importantly as a reminder to the staff and pupils of St. Christopher School of the kind of people that fit in very well there. St Christopher is a fairly unique and very liberal school which tries to tolerate anyone. The Asylum Times is a tribute and a product of this tolerance.

THE ORGAN

THE ASYLUM

The Organ is an unofficial newspaper, widely distributed at St Christopher School in Letchworth, known as "The Asylum Times". It was created by a group of friends who were pupils at St Christopher School from 1990 to 2001. This newspaper rarely reported anything true or sensible, it mostly stuck to publishing satirical nonsense instead.

Over the years the satire sharpened as the paper's popularity and cult following grew enough to seriously rival the official school newspaper, "The Voice". Much of the satire bordered on the offensive and personal. The teachers, many of whom have taught at the school for decades and most old scholars will recognise, were picked on by michevious reporters. In most modern schools, especially stuffy public schools, such behaviour would have led to the immediate explusion of all of the students involved. At St Christopher school the staff reacted in a very different way; they joined in.

More information can be found under the "history" section accessed by clicking here.

The Asylum is our affectionate name of St Christopher School, a private, liberal and progressive school located in Letchworth Garden City, North Hertfordshire.

I shalln't bore you with the history and philosophy of St Christopher School, but I will say this. It was a very strange place and it drew a very strange crowd.

The kids didn't wear a school uniform, everybody addressed eachother on first name terms (hence we will always refer to our headmaster as "Colin"), boarders lived in courtyard cells, the catering was completely vegetarian, the governance was heavily influenced by a relatively strong staff / student council which was alarming as some of the staff are self proclaimed Stalinists! Students were treated to a broad, world class education; everyone had to learn how to play lacross, how to make compost, and how to argue about the virtues of current buns!

In short, it was a madhouse and we miss it very much!

THE LOONIES

MORE FUN

The Loonies are a group of slightly excentric albeit rather bright students who boarded at the school during the late 1990s. Many friends, students and teachers contributed to the Asylum Times over its three year lifetime, but most of the work came from the three students who started the paper up in the first place.

There is much debate as to what it was that inspired our three heroes to launch and run an alternative school newspaper in the middle of their A Levels.

Some old scholars believe that the Asylum Times was inspired by another alternative school Newspaper, the Village Idiot, edited by David James and the Reverend James Cort. Others believe that it was a rebellion against the status quo, a statement of individuality, a triumpth of tolerance, and a positive response to the dire condition of the once great "Voice" newspaper, which was impeccibly edited by the legendary Olly Mann in it's heyday.

Allow me to set the record straight here. Others may have different views, but as far as I'm concerned at least, I did it for a laugh.

Students leave, staff move on, humour matures, summers come and go, governments change and I start to run out of cheesy cliches. The Asylum Times died a silent death as our heroes moved on to bigger and better things, notably in bigger and better educational institutions.

As hardly anything on this website will make any sense to anyone who did not attend St Chris during the late 1990s, we have tried to dream up some more accessible material.

Unfortunately for us we've lost our touch and zeal for the surreal and immature. It appears, ladies and gentlemen, that the inevitable is happening. We are growing up.

Getting humour out of us is akin to getting blood out of a stone (Ha! I've not quite run out of cliches yet!) So, we have left a small graveyard on this site that one hopes may be filled with random snippets of humour that has come to our attention since we were released from St Chris. As the amount of decent material we've managed to gather is so pitifully small, we also chose to stick our links page and guestbook in the same place. Enjoy!
