ABOUT  LOLA

WELCOME NOTE:
Hello, welcome to LoLa's Tid Bits!  I have created this website because I had been asked by many media and entertainment outlets, do you have a website; is there a place I can read your work?  So, to better accommodate potential clients and those who are just interested in reading my work,
I have created this site.  While its not the upper echelon of websites available, it more than serves its purpose.
You will be able to find all kinds of information about the music industry and its seemingly larger than life artists.  I also have some other stuff that might interest you, like articles I have written, bios for some of the top actors, or tips on how you can get involved in the entertainment field.  Just click  a link and enjoy.  If you are a working member of the media (radio, television, or print) or record industry or want to be, drop me an email and i'll get back to you promptly.

OKAY ABOUT ME: I am a young award-winning freelance writer, who is pursuing a B.A. in Criminal Justice.  I reside in a small suburban township located outside of Philadelphia.  I come from a modest family, of two sisters and three brothers.  I am one of the middle children.
My mother worked 25 combined years as a mental health technician and a one-on-one mental health counselor.  She is also a volunteer in her community.  In her younger years she was local model and musician.  My mother is currently a freelance screenplay writer for cinema and television shows.
My father, who owned his own catering business, served every Governor of Virginia since 1952 until his untimely death in 1988.  In early 1952 he prepared and served food to then President Dwight Eisenhower. In later years he went on to be chief caterer to Presidents, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and the recently lost, former President, Ronald Reagan.

SO WHAT WAS THE RELEVANCE OF THAT INFO?  The relevance of my parents history is: their history is my history.  Who or what they were/are had a profound impact on who I am today.  I am their legacy and my work is my legacy to the world.  Therefore, I found it relevant.   With that said, you will have some insight  as to who I am, where I come from and what I am about.  I am a down to earth, solidified, creative, determined, undoubtedly  adorable, educated, optimistic chic.  YES, I said chic!

WHERE I GOT MY INTEREST IN MUSIC AND MOVIES:         I've always had a profound interest in music.  I used to sit at the breakfast table and listen to an AM radio station that played oldies but goodies.  Around the age of seven, I had an interest in singing, although I hid my love of music from my peers and family.  As a teen, I wasn't so reserved.  I listened to rap stars like L.L., Grand Master Flash, Cool C, MC Lyte, the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, and Will Smith, NWA, Queen Latifah,... just to name a few.  I listened to rock music but I didn't know who they were at the time.   Such artists like, Nirvana, Aerosmith, and Mick Jagger.
To encourage my interest in music my  mother, younger sister and I would sing for hours in the evening during the weekday and weekendswhen mom wasnt working that is.  I even enrolled into a community college to learn to play the piano.
That didn't work out the way I expected it to, but then my likeness for music changed and metamorphed into a passion.  I loved all kinds of music, from Fiona Apple and Mary J. Bliege to Ozzy Osbourn and 50 cent.  There was little I wouldn't listen to.
Movies... I love movies of all types!   Even sub-titles!  I have been  a movie junkie for as long as I can remember.  Whether it was animated, horror, or romantic, I watched it.   A few of my first movies were: Holloween II, Yohoo Serious (Young Enstein), Peggy Sue got Married, Can't Buy me Love, Superman II, and Starwars, just to name a few.  Because of my love for movies at a young age, I now have an interest in writing about them.

I READ, I WRITE, I LEARN:
I have loved to read from the time I could tie my own shoes.  Reading was a way for me to escape my everyday life.  The more I read, the stronger my interest in writing became.  My family and friends always told me I wrote well.  I even had an older cousin ask me to assist her in a cover letter, athough she was a graduate from college.  In retrospect, I think she was trying to encourage me to use my natural talent.
My motivation for writing really didn't take off, until another cousin of mine began writing articles, in the 90's, for nationaly recognized magazines like Essence and Ebony.  He even put me in touch with a few editors of smaller magazines, but I didn't believe in my work then (not the way I do now).   So I didn't persue them.
      It wasn't until my
freshman year of college that I dove into the world of entertainment and began interviewing artists like T.I., Girlyman, LL, and Ms. Jade.
A moment in which I really felt like I was on my way was  after I  accepted my third-place award by the New Jersey Press Association for an entertainment article I submitted to my college's newspaper.   That award gave me a lot of confidence, especially since I had never taken a creative or journalism class before.
I now plan to tweak my skills by taking a creative writing course, studying my AP handbook and, freelance for all types of media outlets across the country and beyond.  Finally, I look forward to working with you in the near future!

*For security and personal reasons I have chosen to use a pseudonym instead of my birth given name.  This is common in the industry for those who do not know. Please do not let this decision confuse or dissuade you from working with me! If you have any questions or comments email me.
