I own a 1987 Toyota Corolla II GP Turbo, one of only 6000 made for the local Japanese automotive market. The 3ETE engine has been removed and   replaced with a 4EFTE from a Starlet GT Turbo, this engine is smaller at 1.3ltrs however has more power and development potential.

The Engine Conversion

The engine conversation was half completed by STZ Automotive in Brisbane, Australia, these armatures had no idea what they were doing and basically destroyed the car for every day use.

I saved for a long time for an engine conversion and when I finally had enough money (2500) for a Starlet GT conversion I contacted STZ in Northgate. I wanted the 4EFTE put in, all electrics plugged up and a Daiken heavy duty clutch installed.

It was suppose to take, drive in and out 3 days but instead took 7 days. After I had my car back they charged me more for all lubes and it ran ok for a couple of days until I noticed it was majorly over fueling and thought something was up, my 1st thought was the ECU so I contacted STZ and asked which ECU is in my car and the reply was it is the GT ECU and it may over fuel because the comp is learning my driving style.

In this time they recommended for me to bring the car back so they can change the fuel filter and tune the engine so it doesn't over fuel. - Another 420 dollars.

The over fueling continued for a while so I called back and once again asked what ECU is in the car, and the reply was it is a mix of 3ETE and 4EFTE - 4EFTE ECU with 3ETE plugs - sounded suspicious to me so I contacted a mechanic who is highly recommend; he confirms it is the 3E ECU and not the 4e. (sticker on the ECU was ripped where it shows what model ECU it is and in bright pink pen it has 4e written on it.)

A couple of more days passed and I found my self in a situation on the road where I needed to accelerate fast from a stand still in order to make a yellow light before it turned red - the car stood there with the clutch slipping.

I went back to STZ in Northgate and advised them of the issues I was experiencing and also advised them that the ECU is not the 4EFTE and still the 3ETE, also I was experiencing clutch slippage after a couple of months of driving!

The reply: It will cost more money to put the 4EFTE ECU in - maybe another 600 to 1200 dollars, the clutch maybe broken and it comes with no warranty’s so its not their problem, I stated that I have quotes with what I paid for and that STZ has not delivered as promised. They stated its no their problem and for me to go away.

Now I should mention that the mechanic who worked on my car drives a Starlet GT and he had problems with noisy belts, I didn't and after I got my car back... guess what.. it has noisy belts! maybe the Daiken heavy duty clutch I paid for is in his car and maybe that’s why mine is slipping. Also when I picked up my 3ETE and had it home I noticed it is missing the fuel rail and injectors, the brand new water pump was taken off.

If you would like my advice, please do not deal with STZ Automotive.
