My Personal Antidepressant

(continued)
(page 4)
Life is a grindstone, and whether it grinds a man down or polishes him up depends on the stuff he is made of.
~John Billings
Upon returning home from church on one occasion the late Calvin Coolidge was asked by his wife what the minister had talked about in his sermon. "Sin" was the president's terse reply. "What did the minister say about sin?" his wife inquired. "He was against it." was the president's answer.
We seek, therefore, the things of eternity, the things we can take with us, and there are only three: Our goals, our character (the things our body, mind, and spirit learn and become while we are here), and our relationships.
~P. H. Dunn
There are no big problems there are just a lot of little ones.
~Henry Ford
... If you want to eat an elephant you should first cut it up into little pieces.
It is the responsibility of leadership in the Church to see to it that everyone under our direction qualifies for the celestial kingdom.

As if

Many years ago the great psychologist William James announced his famous "as if" principle. That is; if you want a virtue act "as if" you already have it. That is a most constructuve idea which we should put into practice. If you want to be brave, act brave. If you want to develope a warm, friendly, happy disposition don't go around with a scowl on your face and hatred in your heart. Our mortal and spiritual faculties are like servants. They always serve us with exactly what we request. If we act as thouh we expect to be "a nobody" life assumes that we are in earnest and grants our prayer.
~Sterling W. Sill
As long as a man carries about with him this poorhouse atmosphere, he will always make a poorhouse impression.
~Sterling W. Sill
Self-depreciation is a sin.
You may be very sure that your success will never rise higher than your confidence in yourself.
You must see a better world before you can ever hope to live in it.
You get the role in life which you yourself select.
~Sterling W. Sill
Every man is unique, and every man can do best that job which only God can teach him.
It is the line of least resistance that makes both rivers and men crooked.
We are always down on what we ain't up on.
In every block of marble I see a statue; see it as plainly as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls which imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to other eyes, as mine already see it.
~Michelangelo
I got a glory
~Archibald Rutledge (quoting a riverboat captain)
Could God have prevented these tragedies? The answer is yes. The Lord is omnipotent, with all power to control our lives, save us pain, prevent all accidents, drive all planes and cars, feed us, protect us, save us from labor, effort, sickness, even from death, if he will, but he will not.
~Spencer W. Kimball
... be a light, not a judge of the darkness.
~Stephen R. Covey
I always feel like standing up straight when he is behind me.
~Anne Morrow Lindbergh
I do not believe that sheer suffering teaches. If suffering alone taught, all the world would be wise, since everyone suffers. To suffering must be added mourning, understanding, patience, love, openness, and the willingness to remain vulnerable.
~Anne Morrow Lindbergh (Hour of Gold - Hour of Lead)
Victory cannot come by default.
~Thomas S. Monson
I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.
~Doctrine and Covenants Section 84:88
Cooperation is not so much learning how to get along with others as taking the kinks out of ourself, so that others can get along with us.
~Thomas S. Monson
There are only three ways to teach a child. The first is by example.
The second is by example.
The third is by example.
~Albert Schweitzer
Confucius asked:
"How can a mother crab teach young son to walk straight forward when she herself walks sideways?
What time is it?
A surveyor walking around an army post on the edge of a western town became aquainted with the soldier who fired the cannon at the same time each evening.

"Do you fire this cannon at the same time each evening?" he asked.

"Yes," the soldier replied. "At six o'clock on the dot, and I time it carefully with this watch. I check it everyday by the jewler's clock, two blocks from here.

Several days later the surveyor entered the jewler's shop and engaged the jewler in conversation. That's a mighty fine looking clock you have there," indicating the time piece in the window.

"Yes, it's a good clock, it keeps perfect time," answered the jewler. "In fact, that clock hasn't varied a second in two years."

"That's really marvelous, " exclaimed the surveyor.

"True, and we have a perfect check on it too," elaborated the jewler. "Every evening at exactly six o'clock they fire the cannon over at the fort, and this clockis always right on the dot!"
A mother is a person who takes care of her kids and gets their meals and if she's not there when you get home from school, you wouldn't know how to get your dinner and you wouldn't feel like eating it anyhow.
