LIVING GREEN IN DOMINICA

CONSCIOUS LIVING

“The litany of environmental and social disasters that surround us is suffocating. Toxic pollution taints our earth, water, soil, and food all over the globe. You don't need a scientific study to know of air pollution, since it takes the paint off cars, disintegrates windshield wipers, and destroys works of art. Complex, toxic chemicals are found in the bloodstream of native peoples who are far from any urban center. Blame for this situation is often placed on our political and industrial leaders, but isn't it you and I who are buying and using all the stuff made from toxic chemicals?”  - By Jackie Alan Giuliano, Ph.D.,

Less Toxic Insecticides

*

Insect Control; Ants? Cockroaches? Both ants and cockroaches can be controlled with
Boric Acid. Boric acid (borax and boron-containing salts) is a low-toxicity mineral with
insecticidal, fungicidal, and herbicidal properties. It does not evaporate or volatilize into the

air or pose the considerable health concerns associated with synthetic pesticides; however

it can still pose health hazards and should be used with care. As with any pesticide, keep

boric acid pesticide products out of reach of children and only use it in locations where it

will not come in contact with people or animals, such as in cracks and crevices, behind

counters, and in baseboards. While boric acid is somewhat slower acting than the synthetic

pesticides, like chlorpyrifos, diazinon, or pyrethrins, it is highly effective over a long period

of time. In Dominica Roach Tablets, and Ant Killer Liquid are available in many stores,

their active ingredient is boric acid and they work very well. It does not  kill them dead but

over time will definitely lower populations. For more information:

GREEN CLEANING

Windows

*

Make a great all-purpose window cleaner by combining 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon

liquid soap or detergent, and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake to blend.

Silver

*

Pour heavily salted water into a large aluminum container. Place the silver or silver plated piece into the water and voila! The tarnish is gone.

Bay Oil

*

Cleans, deodorizes, kills bacteria and helps to repel insects. Especially suited to wood surfaces, works good on tile as well, good for floors, walls, cupboards and closets. May stain certain surfaces; try it out in a small area first. Place a few drops of the oil in a pail of water along with liquid dish soap the soap emulsifies the oils throughout the water.

ORGANIC GARDENING

Instead of Herbicides…

Mulch

Covering garden soil with mulch blocks weeds. Use two or three inches of shredded

bark, wood chips, straw, cocoa bean hulls, gravel or rocks. The mulches will also

keep moisture in the soil so you'll have to water less frequently.

Boiling Water

Weeds will burn if exposed to boiling water. This method also kills weed seeds.

Soap

Mix 5 tablespoons of liquid soap (such as dishwashing liquid) in one quart (4 cups) of

water in a spray bottle. Coat the weeds with the soapy water. Works best on hot days.

Vinegar

Pour household vinegar into a spray bottle and evenly coat weeds with it. Vinegar is

five percent acetic acid in water, and it burns the plant, especially on sunny days. For

extra strength weed killer, look for pickling vinegar, which is nine percent acetic acid.

Alcohol

Mix one to five tablespoons of alcohol with one quart (4 cups) of water in a spray

bottle. Shower weeds with the spray.

NATURAL REMEDIES

Bay Oil

Use it as a warming oil for muscle aches and pains and respiratory ailments. This oil always has to be diluted in a carrier oil before applying it to your skin, 3% bay oil, 97% olive oil or coconut oil.

Green Papaya

Slit green papaya around the sides and collect white liquid. Administer to goats, cats or dogs as a vermifuge or dewormer.
