President's address at First business meeting on 23 August 2007
"Challenge to Change" is the International President M. Amarasuriya's theme for the 2007-2008 Lionistic Year and the DG, R. Sibanda's theme is "Aim High to Effect Change -  Dream, Decide, Do". The goals of the International President and the DG are to have 20 000 and 208 new quality members respectively by the end of the year. An achievable figure?  It depends! Some truths need to be spelt out in order to assess our position and pave the way forward effectively.

Our Club numbers are shrinking, commitment has dwindled and therefore we need to get back to the beginning. Why did we join Lions Club; was it for prestige, to serve, or to fill up our monthly calendar?
Steady, Ready, Action!
How then do we achieve the above; set strategies that are not implemented? Not to discredit strategies, they are a map to a destination, but what is a map if there is no effort to get there? When taking a trip, you need INITIATIVE/ PURPOSE (to kickstart the trip), a VEHICLE, take ACTION, PERSERVERANCE, REVIEWING & RE-ASSESSING and finally CELEBRATION.
Change! Change! Change! What is the Cost?  Change needs SACRIFICE! SACRIFICE! SACRIFICE! Lionsim is all about SACRIFICE! You sacrifice TIME, FINANCIAL & MATERIAL RESOURCES, OWN PROGRAMMES but the joy is the knowledge that we have made a difference.
The above is not a measly task. It needs owning up, taking ownership and responsibility of the Club and its objectives.

Often there is a tendency to leave such tasks to a few people. I will tell an analogy I like: If you light a fire, and you put several wood pieces, the fire will light up nicely, but if you leave one piece only, it may burn for a while, then the members will die down, and it will smoke.

The fire lights up when there are many wood pieces because there is SHARING, ENCOURANGEMENT, TOGETHERNESS, SUPPORT, TOLERANCE and PROTECTION.

The areas of Change in our CLub, in my opinion are

- Each person making a choice
- Take Individual Ownership of the Club
- Working together like the wood pieces on fire
- Being available as Vehicles and instruments      of  action
- Renewing our commitment to our Club and
  Lionsim

Motivation lies within us, and I hope that it will be rekindled - no beautifully crafted speech can do that..it can just inspire us, but it is us who have to choose, decide and take action.
SO WHERE ARE WE? WHAT DO WE SAY? KABULA CLUB GOING FORWARD OR WE SHALL WOEFULLY LOOK BACK AT A FAILED YEAR?
