This layout is a copy of a 1959 Lionel Factory Layout. It uses Super-O track
and runs 2 sets of trains. The mountain was built by hand and made of felt. When the layout was
constructed, the only factory layout I had access to was built in 1954. I attempted to duplicate
the construction techniques in order to make this
copy look like the original factory layout as much as possible. Unfortunately,
about a year after I completed the layout I found out that the construction and decorating methods
used by Lionel for these layouts changed dramatically between 1954 and 1959.
I considered taking it apart and starting over - then I decided that these
mistakes helped to make this unique. This layout is powered by a 275 watt ZW transformer.
However, when I run my Congressional set, which has a GG-1, a two motor engine,
with all the passenger car lights, plus another two motor engine and its
consist, then you throw in the accessories, the ZW gets
rather warm. It certainly does not overheat, but it is very warm. I am
considering putting a small transformer underneath to power the accessories and
lights.
