It has been suggested that the families of James Witherspoon, and his daughters,
Mary Burrows and Hester Cassells came from Williamsburg, SC to MS together in
the late 1770's. He owned land on 3 Apr 1814 in Amite Co., MS. In Dec. 1815,
James bourght 318. 51 acres of land in two deals. They are in the SW 1/4, S
14 and 15, T Z, R3E. Original Entries, Amite Co., MS. p.22
Other Witherspoons in Amite Co., MS include James Witherspoon (Franklin Co.,
MS) who sold land which he received from the late Robert Witherspoon to Thomas
M. Witherspoon on June 3, 1833. Amite Co., MS Conveyance Book B4, page 144.

was an elder in the Midway church near Williams burg, S.C. He moved to Amite
Co., MS in 1807.
He was married to Hester or Esther STORY about 1786 in Williamsburg Co., SC.

Hester or Esther STORY was born on 8 Dec 1768 in SC. She died in 1835
in Amite Co., MS.(169) She is mentioned
in her brother, Charles' will to be given $1750. The Story, Storie, Storey
or Storye Family was one of the oldest families in England next to the peerage.
There is a Richard Story in Amite Co., MS as a member of the Ebenezar Baptist
Church. He joined the church on Sat., April 4, 1807 with a letter from little
Briar Creek Church, GA. He is dismissed from the church on Nov 6, 1813. Children
were:

She received three slaves; females, Venus (17) and Harriet (11), and male, London(14).
She also received a horse, saddle and bridle, bed and furniture, four cows and
calves, six sheep and $500.

Charles Story WITHERSPOON was born about 1798. He died after Feb 1827 in
Amite Co., MS. He signed a will on 16 Feb 1827 in Amite Co., MS. Charles S.
gives his son, James M. 3 negroes but not until his mother dies. Slaves are:

Edwin Reese WITHERSPOON was born about 1800. He was a Cotton plantation
owner on 10 Aug 1825 in 1 mile east of Liberty in Amite Co, MS.. He sold land
for $200, which is described in the original patent from the U. S. as the west
half of the NE quarter of section 10, in township 2, of range 4 east, of lands
west of Pearl River in Wilkinson Co., MS. Amite, MS Conveyance Bk 2, pg 143

Lenora WITHERSPOON was born about 1804. She resided Amite Co., MS in 1820.
She sells property in the Book of Conveyances 2, page 118. She was the owner
of Deed on 5 Sep 1825 in Amite Co., MS. James A. Witherspoon to William C. Maxwell
and Charles Davis a Deed of Trust for the benefit of Lenora Witherspoon, wife
of John E. Witherspoon. Seven hundred dollars is give to purchase two negro
girls: Leah - slightly tinged with yellow about 12 years old and Rose - black
complexion, about 9 years old. When Lenorah dies, the slaves to go to Jane M.
Witherspoon, daughter of John and Lenorah. Amite Co., MS Bk 2, pg 118. |
