Pond Construction 1999

We had a dream for years to have a nice medium size garden pond.  In 1999 we started our plans.  To start I will explain a little about our property.  We have 7 1/2 acres of land.  Our house is in the middle up on a hilltop.  We fenced off a small front courtyard with cedar post fence in keeping with our cedar siding country home.  This is where we placed this pond.  Danny built an arbor for our front entrance to the courtyard.  Our plans were to have a long pond with a waterfalls at one end.  It expanded to go across the walkway so we added bridge.  The stone path would lead on to the front door.  Our pond welcomes all our guests.

Digging and lining the pond

Adding the water

Danny started digging in early December 1999.  It is 2 1/2' to 3' under the waterfalls.  It is 12' long, 6' wide at the waterfalls, 2' under the bridge, and 4' wide at the fountain side of the bridge.  Once the hole was dug be made a second layer shelf all around the edge.  We used much of the dirt to build up where the waterfalls would be constructed.  We lined the pond and the waterfalls with flexible rubber pool liner called EDPM.  Once the liner was in we started filling it with water. The pond holes about 800 gallons of water.

We had saved rock from all around on our travels.  Family and friends brought us some special ones.  We had to buy some for special shapes. We lined the shelf with rocks the piled a second layer of rocks on them.  We had a lot of trial and error on our waterfall but we finally got it the way we wanted it.  We added garden art at strategic places. You will see all in Pond Garden 2001, 2002 and 2003.

This is the best view I can get of the filter now.  The plants have covered it successfully.

Waterfalls with Bio Filter and Overflow

Cobblestone walkways

Here is a rough description of our Bio Filtering system. We started with a pump/filter with the fountain.  Attached to it is the hose that runs underground back to the Bio Filter located behind the waterfalls.  The water runs through the Bio Filter and back into the pond at the waterfalls and the overflow.  Danny built the Bio Filter from a 40 gal plastic water drum we acquired free.  He cut the top out and drilled holes all in it to use as part of the filter.  He layered lava rock, this drilled filter and mesh screen netting.  The pipes directed the water in such a way that it filters the water and allows good algae to grow before returning to the pond. It must be doing its job because our

After this was all finished Danny built the cobblestone walks from the front door to the bridge then bridge to the guest parking area.  The walkway to the right is to the feeding area of the pond on the waterfalls side.  There is another walk that he added later to the left that leads to our carport.
