Cilla - What's It All About

Paul recalled Cilla Black's illustrious career.

It was forty years ago that Cilla Black began the journey that would result in her position as a national icon. Today she's perhaps best known for her television career. But her musical heritage is a rich and significant one.

Featuring an exclusive and in-depth interview with Cilla, this documentary features newly discovered demos and rehearsal takes and some of the long forgotten sessions she recorded for the BBC - songs never heard before.

Programme One: Something Tells Me

"...there weren't too many white singers around which could convey the emotion that I felt in many of the songs I wrote but that changed with people like Cilla Black..." - Burt Bacharach

Born into very humble surroundings in one of Liverpool's roughest residential areas, the young girl named Priscilla Maria Veronica White always wanted to be a singer. As the famous showbiz story goes, Cilla could regularly be found in her lunch hour escaping to the trendy haunts of the Cavern and the Zodiac where she met her future husband Bobby Willis. "Swinging Cilla", as she became known, soon began performing alongside legendary acts who were fundamental in establishing the Mersey Beat sound such as The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. Cilla soon came to the attention of Brian Epstein.

This programme considers how Cilla Black became the most successful British female singer of the Sixties, and why she chose to leave the music business behind her in the Seventies. Featuring the hits: "Anyone Who Had a Heart", "You're My World" and "Step Inside Love".

Programme Two: Beginning Again

As TV went from black-and-white into colour, so Cilla was transformed from singing sensation into the first lady of British television. Her debut series for the BBC attracted 21 million viewers. As the music, energy and excitement of the Sixties made way for the glam-rock of the seventies; Cilla embraced 'the box' and found success with sit-coms, and variety and music shows. In 1983, the year of her twentieth anniversary in showbiz, her celebratory hits album saw a new interest in her music, and the question: "Why don't we see more of you on telly?" Within two years, Cilla Black was back on TV. With 'Surprise Surprise' and 'Blind Date', Cilla became Britain's leading television personality. But how did Cilla use TV to resurrect her career and maintain her profile, and why has she only now decided to return to her first love, singing?

With contributions from: Blue, Lulu, Sir Cliff Richard, Michael Winner, Terry Wogan, David Jacobs, Sir Tim Rice, Nina Myskow, Michael Hurll and Denise Van Outen.
