LILY SAVAGE - THE WICKED QUEEN
Lily began her career as a pub and club entertainer, where she worked for years, building her audience and honing her talent. Lily moved from South London's Royal Vauxhall Tavern to the London Palladium, sharing the bill with Victoria Wood in 1993 and appearing there in her own show in 1994.
In June 1995 Lily took over as the Big Breakfast'S celebrity interviewer and became known to millions as the 'Queen of the Boudoir'. Since then Lily has graced (and indeed disgraced) many a famous television sofa - from Richard and Judy's to Des O'Connor's. She has also hosted her own television series Life Swaps for BBC2 and the cult hit Live From The Lilydrome for Granada.
In November 1996 Lily performed in front of a celebrity audience for the hilarious hour-long ITV special An Evening With Lily Savage. The show attracted over 12 million viewers and was entered for the Montreaux Festival '97 by ITV Network. The show went on to win the award for 'Most Popular Entertainment Programme' at the National Television Awards in October 1997 followed by the 'Best Entertainment Programme Award' at the British Comedy Awards in December 1997.
Lily enjoys popping up on kids' TV ranging from Bang Bang Chicken on the popular kid's programme Pirates, to looning on The Ant And Dec Show. Other TV work includes Top Of The Pops, That's Showbusiness, Clive James, Des O'Connor, co-host on Smash Hit's Poll Winners Party '96, Late License, The Steve Wright Show, The New Statesman and Brookside.
A sell-out tour in May 1995 (also available on video Lily Savage - Live At The Garrick) was followed by a highly successful twelve week run in the West End of Prisoner: Cell Block H - The Musical. Prisoner then went on the road for a sell-out national tour.
Lily spent the summer of '96 appearing on the North Pier in Blackpool. The Lily Savage Variety Show broke box office records and ended its four-month run at the beginning of November. This was closely followed by the launch of the video An Evening With Lily Savage, the extended version of the TV special, featuring out-takes and gags TV couldn't show.
Lily returned to more sell-out nights in Blackpool, this time in the 3,000 seater Opera House with Lily's Christmas Cracker, which ran raucously through Christmas and New Year. She was a guest on ITV's Christmas Day extravaganza Christmas With The Stars.
1997 was an even busier year. Lily continued to do guest appearances on TV, including a dramatic entrance in punk gear at An Audience With Elton John and the occasional phone-in on Richard And Judy. From 10 March until 7 June Lily was again on tour nationally with Prisoner: Cell Block H - The Musical and no sooner was that over than she was working on the writing of her new series for BBC1, The Lily Savage Show. The six-part series was transmitted on Sundays at 10.00pm on BBC1 and ran through until 21 December.
The Untransmittable Lily Savage Show was a video compilation of some of the 'untransmittable' moments of the recording of the show released in December. A Christmas Special of Blankety Blank was screened on Boxing Day.
In November 1997 Lily was voted 'Best Comedian/Comedienne' by readers of Smash Hits and then went on to be awarded 'BBC TV Personality of 1997' by the Variety Club of Great Britain.
During 1998 Lily recorded two hit series of Blankety Blank and made a much talked about appearance on Parkinson with Cilla Black. She wrote her book Lily Savage: A Sort of A-Z Thing, which went on sale on October 29th. Lily also appeared in a sell-out nationwide tour which started on the 2nd September in Bournemouth and finished on the 7th November in Liverpool. A live video was recorded during the tour, Lily Savage The Live Show, which went on sale on the 16th November.
Adding to her awards, Lily won TV Quick awards 'Funniest Person on TV '98' and 'Best Gameshow '98' for Blankety Blank. She was also awarded 'Personality of the Year 1998' at Scouseology Awards in Liverpool.
Lily went on to play Miss Hannigan in Annie at the Victoria Palace Theatre, which ran from 15 December 1998 until 7 February 1999. She joined the national tour from 13 April 1999 in Bradford, going on to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and, later in the year, Manchester, Leeds, Aberdeen and Liverpool.
Another series of Blankety Blank was televised on BBC in August/September 1999, followed by a Christmas Special. Lily was awarded 'Most Popular Entertainment Presenter' at the National Television Awards held in October 1999.
Lily rejoined Annie at the beginning of November '99 for six weeks, before doing pantomime in Birmingham (The Hippodrome) appearing as the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
In October 1999 Lily moved channels to work with Carlton Television, writing and recording new programmes. The first series of Lily Live was shown on ITV in September/October 2000. Lily then returned to the theatre for her cherished role as the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton on 22 December, breaking box office records.
In the spring of 2001 Lily appeared in a new series of Blankety Blank, closely followed by a second series of the Lily Live show. Lily made a spectacular appearance at the Royal Variety Performance together with Cilla Black and Barbara Windsor. They chose a scene from Gypsy and practically stole the show.
Lily had Christmas 2001 off pantomime, but will be appearing in Manchester in December 2002 as the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Another series of Blankety Blank, which was recorded towards the end of 2001, has been screened on ITV this year.
