Inuyasha is one of the main characters of this anime series, obviously, since the
show is named after him. His name literally means 'Dog Demon', giving him his
name Inuyasha (Inu=Dog, Yasha=Demon). He is one of the two sons of the great
Lord Inuyoukai of the Western Lands. He is a half-breed because of his mother,
whom his father is fond of. Because he is the son of great Lord Inuyoukai, he
inherits much of his fathers attributes. He has his fathers eyes, hair, dog ears, his
healing powers fondness of humans, and his great strength. Although these may
be his advantages as a hanyou, he still has a disadvantage. On the first night of
every month, when it is a full moon, he transforms to a full human. His hair
changes to black, his eyes becomes violet, his dog ears disappear and he loses his
fangs and claws. Because of this, he loses his power and becomes vulnerable to
danger so he hides this secret from everyone he knows.
Apart from these, he has the ability to wield Tetsusaiga, sword made out of the
fangs of his father, which was found in the graves of his father in a little black ball
in Inuyasha's right eye. This was his father's gift to Inuyasha. As the series
continues, we learn that this sword is a guardian sword. At certain times when
Inuyasha is in an injured state and has feelings of concern and the battle is be-
tween life or death, his youkai blood overpowers his human blood and he be-
comes full youkai. At this state, he is like a fighting machine, never stopping until
he fights to his own death. His father knew this would be a problem for him so as
long as the Tetsusaiga is with Inuyasha, it becomes a guardian to protect him from
becoming full youkai. The more he transforms into a full youkai, he will eventually
lose his mind.   
Kagome Higurashi is a 3rd year Junior High School student whose grandfather is a
shrine priest. She lives with her mother, her little brother Souta, and her grand-
father in the Higurashi Shrine. On the grounds of her home is the Hone Kui no Ido,
the Bone Eater's Well, the portal to Sengoku Jidai, The Warring Period, where
Inuyasha lives. On the day of her 15th birthday, she visits the well and when she
was about to leave, she gets pulled into the well by a demon monster known as
She climbs out of the well, hoping that all this was a dream, but finds herself in a
strange place. She walked around and for the first time, she meets Inuyasha,
pinned to the Goshinboku Tree with an arrow, tree roots wrapping around him. She
wanders off and meets Lady Kaede whom at first thought Kagome was her dead
sister, Kikyou. Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyou, who died 50 years ago.
She explains everything that happened earlier and when night came, the demon
attacked again. They were led back to the Goshinboku Tree and Inuyasha wakes
up. He thinks she is Kikyou, the one who pinned him to this tree, and demands to
get revenge or at least to know why she did that. The demon attacks and slashes
the spot where the Shikon no Tama was hidden in her. Inuyasha demands to pull
the miko's arrow out and kills the demon. He tries to get the Shikon no Tama from
her and Lady Kaede puts a rosary around his neck so that only Kagome is able to
control him by saying 'Osuwari' (sit). She keeps the Shikon no Tama and the next
day, a bird demon snatches the Shikon no Tama and tries to fly away. Inuyasha,
isn't able to reach the bird and Kagome uses an arrow and it pierces the Shikon no
Tama which the bird swallowed. Thus, it broke into many, many pieces and
Kagome is in charge of getting them back with Inuyasha and other characters they
meet in later series.   
Sango is a cute 16 year old girl who lives with her father and her brother, Kohaku,
in the village of Taiji. She is a youkai exterminator and her family is the head of
the village where humans learn techniques that can be used to exterminate you-
kais in villages. It is said that this is the village where the Shikon no Tama
originated from. One day, some of the best exterminators were informed to go to
a castle to get rid of a spider youkai that only appears in the night. Apart form her
father and brother, they had to go since they were head of the Taiji. This was all
Naraku's plan to kill them so when the spider youkai was killed, Naraku implanted
a Shikon no Kakera (Shikon Shard) into Kohaku's back and possessed him to kill
all the other taijis with them. Facing his sister, he was ordered to kill Sango.Sango
tried to stop him because she thought Kohaku lost his mind, but by the time she
realizes that he was being controlled with a Shikon no Kakera, he attacked her
and slashes her back. The guards of the castle shot arrows into Kohaku, thinking
he was insane and when Sango tried to go near him, they shot arrows at her too.
She crawled over to him with all her energy and Naraku released the power to
control Kohaku. Kohaku died, but though it seems as if Sango died, she didn't.
She was the only one who survived. Naraku used his powers of deception and
told her that the one who killed everyone was Inuyasha and ordered her to go
and kill him. Because she was bleeding a lot and she felt a lot of pain throughout
her body, Naraku implanted a Shikon no Kakera in her and she ran off to find
Inuyasha to kill him. With much battle trying to kill Inuyasha, he didn't kill her,
but dodged her attacks instead and tried to convince her that Naraku was the
one who was behind all this. Once she was convinced, Naraku took out the
Shikon no Kakera and she collapsed onto the floor. Inuyasha killed the puppet
Naraku and once Sango rested enough, Inuyasha asked if she would like to join
them on their quest to find all the Shikon no Kakera and kill Naraku. She gladly
accepted since she wanted revenge on Naraku. Poor girl, she was really
depressed...she lost her family members and everyone she knew in just one day..   
Miroku is a 19 year old traveling monk who came across Kagome, Inuyasha
and Shippou one day. He is indeed a perverted monk. Whenever he comes across
a pretty woman, the first thing he'd say would be, "Please bear my child." He
does this because he wants an heir to continue on the quest to go after Naraku
if he were to get sucked in by the Kazaana (Air void), or Wind Tunnel. Although
the Kazaana is very useful at times, he may get inflicted with poison if he were
to suck in poisonous bees sent by Naraku in the later episodes. To protect
himself from using the Kazaana too often, which might lead to splitting the air
void and decreasing his life span, he uses these special beads to protect the
air void in his right palm. The air void has been passed on from his father who
was cursed with the air void by Naraku. If Naraku is destroyed, the curse will
be lifted and Miroku's life will be spared so, after finding out that Kagome,
Inuyasha (later on in the series)and Sango all have similar goals to go after
Naraku, he joins the group. Besides the Kazaana, he can use holy powers,
sometimes uses his staff and has the great ability to sense when there's an evil
presence nearby. Note/Spoiler: that even though he asks every single pretty woman to bear his child, he claims that he'll always love Sango no matter what.
