Criteria for Selection

Either by invitation, public audition or recorded performance submission.

PUBLIC AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD AT CEDAR VALLEY COLLEGE SATURDAY JANUARY 12, 2008 AND SATURDAY JANUARY 19, 2008 FROM 12:00 NOON UNTIL 3:00 PM CEDAR VALLEY COLLEGE MUSIC HALL LANCASTER, TEXAS

Competition Information

Youth Division:

The Youth Division of the Cedar Walton Competition allows participants 21 years of age or younger (as of the date of the first round of competition) to compete for National Recognition as a Finalist:

Submission must be:

• in the form of a cassette, CD, VHS tape or DVD;


• taped performance must be between 3 - 5 minutes;


• performance must include any Cedar Walton composition, the form shall be the head, one time through as a solo section, the head and out. This performance may be with or without accompaniment.

Awards

First Prize -

• $1,000.00 scholarship award.

Second Prize -

• $500.00 scholarship award.

Third Prize -

• $250.00 scholarship award.

Open Division:

The Open Division of the Cedar Walton Competition allows participants who are at least 21 years of age (as of the date of the first round of competition) to compete for National Recognition as a Finalist: and

Submission must be:

• in the form of a cassette, CD, VHS tape or DVD;


• taped performance must be between 5 - 7 minutes;


• performance must include the Cedar Walton composition “X”, the form shall be the head, one time through as a solo section, the head and out. This performance may be with or without bass and drums (only) as accompaniment;


• the taped performance  must include at least three minutes of playing with bass and drums (only) as accompaniment;


• the taped performance must include at least two minutes of solo performance.

Awards

First Prize -

• Ten Hours of Recording Studio Time at Maximedia Recording Studio, Dallas, Texas. The recording shall be engineered by renowned recording engineer Hal Fitzgerald, Erykah Bhadu, Lauryn Hill and others;
• Performance at Grand Concert;
• Performance on Cedar Walton Jazz Piano Competition CD.

Second Prize -

• Performance at Grand Concert;
• Performance on Cedar Walton Jazz Piano Competition CD.

Third Prize -

• Performance on Cedar Walton Jazz Piano Competition CD.
