Criteria for Judging

Youth Division

At the competition, the participants will be required to perform the following:

• Solo Selection chosen by Participant (4 minutes or less);


• Performance of one of the following Cedar Walton Compositions:
  
  -List 5 Cedar Compositions and the key to be played. To be played with bass and drums plus one other solo instrument;
  -Form: head, guest soloist, head, piano solo, head and out.


• Performance of a Twelve Bar Blues:
  
  -Key to be determined by Judges;
  -Performed with bass and drums;
  -Style shall be selected by judges. Style will be either straight ahead, funk or latin.

Open Division

At the competition, the participants will be required to perform the following:

• Solo Selection chosen by Participant (4 minutes or less);


• Performance of one Cedar Walton Composition (title chosen after confirmation of entrant):
  
  -List 5 Cedar Compositions and the key to be played. To be played with bass and drums plus one other solo instrument;
  -Form: head, guest soloist, head, piano solo, head and out.


• Twelve Bar Blues:
  
  -Key to be determined by Judges Performed with bass and drums;
  -Style shall be selected by judges. Style will be either straight ahead, funk or latin.

Score Sheet

For Each Song Performed, the Participant will be judged on a scale from 1 - 10 on the following:

• Preparation;


• Technique;


• Improvisation;


• Ensemble Accompaniment (where applicable).
