Information Security Management of an Intranet & Internet
By: Viresh Shah
Published on February 3, 2006

This article supports the idea that cryptography can be an easy and inexpensive solution for strengthen security in a local area network; especially if this network is connected to the Internet.
Viresh Shah focuses on the application of cryptography by using SSL and S/MIME protocols. The implementation of this technique secures basic Internet-related services and provides: message encryption, message integrity, digital signatures, and strong authentication for any user trying to access the resource.  At the same time, it provides encrypted or ciphered sessions between computers and servers. This can significantly decrease the threat of information packets captured using a sniffer utility.
I believe this article is relevant to the class because it provides a good introduction to the science of cryptography and how it is applied to some of the most common computer services available in most organizations.  It may be a good path to follow for those classmates responsible for administering information or involved in the administration of IT services.
