Why there are two capitals?
The bridge in St. Petersburg
History of Russia is one of the most difficult parts of world history. Once one Russian poet Tutchev said that nobody could understand Russia and measure it. If you sincerely love this country you have only believe in it.
From old time to nowadays Russia have had a lot of war, revolutions and other political and economical changes. And one of the most interesting facts is that Russian has changed their capital's place for several times
First of all the capital of Russia was Moscow. Moscow became capital in the end of
15th century during Ivan III management. And it kept going until 1712 when Peter the Great made a decision to move capital of Russian Imperia to new built St. Petersburg.
.    St. Petersburg was the capital until Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. After that in 1918 such change happened again, and Moscow became a capital of new country Soviet Union.

These two cities are different and similar at the same time. It is a really symbolic that Moscow and St. Petersburg are connected by the high-speed railroad. The project was started in 1991, and now it became famous railroad in Russia.
Contemporary capital of Russian Federation is Moscow. But St. Petersburg is still playing important part in Russian life, especially in cultural, historical and tourist aspects. St. Petersburg has always been and was recently officially proclaimed the 'Cultural Capital of Russia'.  St. Petersburg is an exciting city, which has to offer more than simply the
Hermitage Museum and the Kirov Ballet of the Mariinsky Theater. Officially proclaimed the "Cultural Capital of Russia" St. Petersburg is a place, where you need weeks just to see all its major landmarks.
In spite of its historical value Moscow has always been playing business part in Russian life.  There are concentrated banks, exchanges, and other financial institutes. From the old time Moscow was merchant city. The shopkeepers and the merchants brought their goods for sale in Moscow. The place around Red Square, where they sell their wares, was known as China Town. This name still wears one of the underground stations in Moscow.
Definitely, Moscow is noisier and bigger than St. Petersburg.  Inhabitants in Moscow like to wear the rich and fancy clothes. People in Moscow have more epatage than everywhere in Russia.  Buildings are big and wide, and streets are crowded. Life style in Moscow is really impetuous. That is a contrast between these two cities, because in St. Petersburg life is more calm, poetic and romantic.
Moscow River
From May 25 - 26 and till July 16 - 17 you can enjoy magnificent White Nights on the bank of the Neva River that last over 50 days. June 21 - 22 are the longest days (18 hours 53 minutes). The sun hardly hides behind the horizon, and you cannot find even the brightest stars in the night sky. This is one of the nature phenomena in the world and such a lovely time in the whole year. Every year there are days when the downtown St Petersburg is full of people, even at night.
Being part of Russian history, not only the place of the capital was changed not once, but also the names of the cities and streets were changed too. Fortunately, it didnt touch Moscows name. But St. Petersburg has been changed its name fourth. It is an interesting fact that first it was named in honor of St. Peter and NOT Peter the Great, the founder of the city.
The name can be translated as "The City of St. Peter". Than it was changed to Petrograd in 1914, Leningrad in 1924 and St. Petersburg in 1991 until present. The names of the streets, underground stations also suffered some alterations.
Now Russia has a lot of economical and political problem. And these cities do too. I hope that my country is going to get over all difficulties, and Moscow and St. Petersburg will keep right to be called the amazing and great cities in the world.
