Baby Doll Courtesan: Construction & Pictures
Corset
We modified the corset pattern so that it hit under the bust and extended on the hips two more inches. We also made them one size smaller so that we had more of a cinched effect (modern patterns aren't completely accurate - making them smaller ensured that the corset actually worked as a corset!). We used regular plastic boning (as opposed to steel) and we used hook and eye tape in the front rather than a metal busk. We basted duck cloth to the fashion fabric for more stability before creating the boning channels. There are 30 grommets in the back and the lacing was simply the 99 cent ribbon you can get at JoAnns. The edges were finished with bias tape and the front buttons are hand sewn on.
For Maggie's corset, we originally wanted a brocade fabric with a large floral pattern. But we couldn't find anything we liked and Maggie fell in love with a baby blue fabric shot through with silver thread. To mimic the floral effect, we bought tiny ribbon flowers in different colors and sizes and hand stitched them on. You can't really see them in the final picture, but they're there, trust me!

Skirt
We did spend quite a bit of money on each costume so we didn't want to purchase a pattern for the skirts. Each were 'draped' on the body and then pinned and stitched. For Maggie's skirt, we sewed everything together, putting a lot of the fullness at the back. The sides of the skirt were gathered, creating a draped swag effect in the front. The back was pinned up every so often and then hand tacked down - it was designed on a whim and the final effect looks a lot like a bustle. Where the fullness was hand-sewn down we also put a small ribbon flower to hide the stitches. We added elastic to the waist to finish it, since it would be hidden by the corset anyway.
