The Hawthorns
'100 Years At The Hawthorns'
1900-2000
The home of the Albion since 1900, following the move from the old Stoney Lane ground, which had the worst pitch in the country.  Originally the ground was ours on a fourteen-year lease until in 1913, the club brought the ground for 5,350.

The ground was officially opened on the 3rd September 1900, and a crowd of 20,104 saw us draw 1-1 with Derby County but at that time the crowd had a capacity of 35,500.

Little work was done on the ground between 1900 and 1913 but in 1914 after the ground had been brought the stands were extended, terracing installed and the capacity was increased to 66,000, but the highest attendance ever at the Hawthorns was in 1937 when 64,815 fans turned out to see the FA Cup against Arsenal.

Floodlights were installed in 1957 but the ground as we see it know didn't look the part until the 1960's....

How it was then: The 1950's
The Rainbow Stand was completed in 1964 and officially opened on the 25th September, it was nicknamed the Rainbow Stand because initially all the rows of seats were painted a different colour.  But many of us from younger generations remember it for being all blue and white.

Work on the Halfords Lane started in 1979 and was completed in 1982, eventually holding 4,500 fans and a few Executive boxes.

Events at Hillsborough meant that major work took place at the Hawthorns in the late 80's and early 90's to make the ground all-seater.  The Smethwick End and Brummy Road terracing was demolished and all seater stands went up.

The 1994-95 season kicked off with five straight away games because the 4 million refurbishment of the Brummy Road end wasn't finished, and there simply cannot be an home game with out the Brummy Road being full of the Albion faithful.  The ground was officially opened on the 26th September 1994.
1994-2000
Six years after the opening of the new Brummy Road in 1994, saw the final game with the Rainbow Stand still standing on the 1st January 2001.  It dropped the capacity down for the end of that promotion-chasing season and most games were a sell out.

The new East Stand was completed in time for the first home game of the 2001/02 season against Grimsby and so far the highest attendance at the ground since the redevelopment is 27,179 at the F1 Cup 5th Round match against Cheltenham.
