Martin Luther King Jr was one of the most famous civil rights leaders the world has ever known. He was known for his passion and determination as well as his superior oratorical skills shown in some of his famous speeches. The question this paper unravels is how did he make such an impact on the world stage? What characteristics of his leadership style inspired the negro population of the southern states of America to put their lives literally on the line because he asked them to?

What factors influenced Martin Luther King Jrs style? Was he born a leader or did his environment make him a leader?
His father was the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.[1] Negro church leaders were seen as the natural leaders of the negro population.[2] King would have seen his father as the ultimate leadership role model. Not only was his father a pastor, but his grandfather also.

Taking this information into account, it is hard to deny that King would have some of the genes and perhaps some of the personality traits from his father and grandfather.  One could also say that he was born into the role of leadership as in Great Man Theory,  and it is also easy to see that through his social environment (his church was his second home) he learned many of his leadership skills.
King reacted to his fathers preaching with awe, respect, intimidation and embarrassment. He did not agree with his fathers fundamentalist ways which led him to question the relevance of Christianity in real life.[2] Even so, it can be seen that being exposed to his fathers preaching methods and church and community leadership, provided a foundation from which his own preaching and leadership style developed. At college he won a prize for his oratory skills[2] and was known throughout his life as a great orator when giving speeches to rouse passion in his followers.
