Leadership
Theories
We asked Dave how he had developed his leadership style. He had had a rather dysfunctional childhood in which he had found it necessary to take responsibility in order to survive. He believes he was a born leader as he may have coped with life in a different way had he not been born with those traits. Whereas Dave leads by personality, his brother, a naval captain, has a more authoritative/strategic leadership style. As both brothers have taken on leadership roles, this points to their childhood environment impacting their leadership abilities. Interestingly, their parents have not been involved in leadership.

Passionate about leadership, Dave has undertaken extensive training through courses and seminars. He continues to develop his leadership skills. He has been mentored by other leaders and has mentored others. Through mentoring others in leadership, not only does he find satisfaction in seeing the development of his protgs, but finds that he also learns much from them. Leaders who have inspired Dave include Rick Warren and Bill Hybels, two prominent Christian leaders as well as Phil Baker, a well known church leader here in Perth. He has always admired Nelson Mandela because,
He never wavered, was not power hungry, he communicated the dream, showed integrity and had the ability to harness hostile opposition.
Dave shared about his current position where he had come to this church in 1995. At that time the church was extremely fundamentalist, conservative and legalistic. For the first 6-7 years of ministry he was fuelled by raw passion to develop the church to be more open, friendly and relevant. This stage involved fighting conservatism where people did not want change. Initially he would dress in suit and tie, but over time changed his dress to a more casual style where now jeans are the acceptable dress code. As he did this on his own, it demonstrated a major feat which saw a transforming cultural change. However, once he had achieved this change he found himself totally burnt out. The passion was gone and realising that the people now looked to him as the leader he felt totally unprepared for the future. As the church had grown substantially, he now needed a team to share the responsibilities of leadership, but had no idea how to manage a team. Although his leadership style had worked to cultivate change he now realised the need for different skills.

He came to realise several key points about successful leadership:
Re-invent yourself
The need to RE-INVENT yourself. Success in leadership will rise for a time but then plateau and eventually die. It is necessary to reinvent yourself and your vision at the beginning of the plateau for continual growth. Always strive to learn.

Wise leaders show openness
Wise leaders show openness, stay human and ensure others shoulder the burden with them.
