| Profiles | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | Obviously as a police officer you have been through formal training in areas of leadership, has this been significant to your preferred leadership style? It is necessary to have a certain regimented psyche that goes with the job. I hold authority through rank, but have earned respect and trust through leadership. Being able to delegate, encourage ownership. The police work through a chain of command and I extend that by not only sharing knowledge but also inviting knowledge from my subordinates. One thing about leadership is you never stop learning and listen to your followers you are always going to learn. |

| 2. | What traits as a leader are your strongest? I am a good communicator and strategist. I am very motivated to reach targets. The ability to adapt to a variety of situations is almost pre-requisite in my line of work which requires a diverse range of skills. To me the essence of leadership is self-awareness and knowing your followers. Listening is very important, if you want people to have confidence in you, you need to know what their needs are. |
| 3. | What role models did you have? I had a great role model in my Officer in Charge, I was second in charge. I related to his style and modeled mine accordingly though I am less autocratic in my approach. |
| 4. | What is difficult about being a leader? A lot of people count on me to make the right decisions at the right time. There are situations that require instant decision making and strong leadership and I can not waver, that can be exhausting but also offer the greatest challenges. You are never going to please everyone and there are times when I have been frustrated by someones uncooperative actions. |
| 5. | What has been the most rewarding experience for you? During my time at the Police Academy as a trainer I also became mentor to many of the recruits. I made the effort to get on a personal level with them, get to know them and their families and offer guidance and support as well as formal training. There is great satisfaction in watching them on graduation and this would be the most rewarding. |
