Who's That Doll?
JPI STARR MODELING AGENCY
1990's 1990's
In the mid- to late-1990's, Jaks Pacific International (JPI) produced a line of miniature fashion dolls they named the Starr Modeling Agency dolls. There were seven dolls in the line, all female. No male dolls were ever produced. Starr was the platinum-blonde headliner for this group, and she ran the agency. Each doll came with a portfolio of photos, similar to the Topper Dawn Model Agency dolls, as well as a small booklet which explained the origins of Starr's agency, and a short biography of each model.

Many, many fashions were made for Starr and her girls, and most were sold separately. Some were even made as two outfits in one. Add a long skirt to a short dress, and you had a beautiful evening gown. Lots of lace, lame and glitz were used in the making of these fashions. This WAS the 90's, after all!
Body-styles of the Starr dolls were similar to that of the Topper Dawn dolls. Each doll had a twist-and-turn waist, with arms and legs jointed at the shoulders and hips. The knees were bendable, but did not suffer from the "green-knee" syndrome to which the Dawn dolls were so prone. In addition to moving back and forth, the arms could also be moved out away from the body. The head swiveled on the neck post. Hair was rooted, but other facial features were painted on. Dolls are marked on their backs "JPI Made in China".

At left  is the most difficult  Starr doll to find: Asian-featured Jade. So few of her were produced that she doesn't even show up on most of the package advertising...even her own box!
There were several different versions of each Starr doll produced, including the Fun Wear line, the Hollywood Glamour line, and the Fabulous Furs line. Each doll came with an exclusive fashion, unavailable separately.

In addition, there were some extra outfits packaged as a special line of fashions, such as the "Baby Doll Dream" fashions and the "Time for Fun" fashions. There are at least as many outfits for Starr and her friends as there were for Dawn, and probably more.
