Who's That Doll?
1990's 1990's
MATTEL FAMILY CORNERS
Mattel made another foray into the world of miniature fashion dolls in the mid-1990's, with their line of Family Corners dolls. With society attempting to become more and more "politically correct", this line of dolls was designed to support the growing trend of multi-racial families. The back of their packaging, although done in a cutesy little verse aimed at the six- to eight-year-old set, reinforced the idea that "any combination makes a family!"

There are five sets of "families" -- five brides, five grooms and five babies. It's interesting to note that the babies come in the packaging with the male dolls, and they're all simply adorable! The girls come with a "house" playset, and the guys come with a slide-in piece that is a wedding chapel on one side, and a baby nursery on the other. The guys also come with a set of stickers which can be used to personalize the playsets. All the dolls come with one casual outfit and one wedding outfit---either a gown or a tux.
The dolls shown above are the two harder-to-find dolls, the Asian couple Trista and Derek. In the pictures to the right, you can see how the house opens up, and the chapel/nursery slides into the edge of the house with a tab.
Body styles for the females are similar to both the Disney Princess and the Princess Tenko dolls. The torso is one-piece, with jointed neck, shoulders and hips. The shoes are formed to be the feet, with details painted on. Arms are slightly bent forward, but they do not swivel out away from the body. Hair is rooted, and very soft, and facial details are painted on.

The males also have a uniform torso construction, with jointed neck, shoulders and hips. Shoes are painted on, as is the hair and facial features.

The babies have heads that turn, and rooted hair. Dolls are marked simply "China" on the backs of their waists.
Brides come with wedding gowns, grooms with tuxes. The baby comes with one outfit that can't be changed.
