Andrel is the son of two wealthy retired city guards. Growing up was one long training session after another as they tried to make him in their own image. All that Andrel wanted, however, was to be just like his older brother, Mikal. The only problem was that Mikal was a mage.

Eventually, Andrel's parents gave up and sent him to enter training for the army. Being an obedient son, he packed up and left. He dictated letters at every opportunity to be sent to his brother and progressed rapidly through his training with no distractions.
One fateful day, he received notice from his supervisors that his family had been attacked by an unknown group that his parents had offended. The only casualty was his brother Mikal. Andrel lost his grip on reality and began trying to learn to cast magic in order to contact his brother wherever he must have been hiding. It was an impossible task but that didn't prevent him from trying. Soon after he was expelled from army training. Instead of returning home he began adventuring to exorcise his personal demons.

He has been adventuring for quite some time and believes he has found the secret to spellcasting. The secret is the right components. Everyone else tells him that they are just magic items but Andrel replies "Of course, you need magic items to cast magic spells." He doesn't even need to memorize from a musty old tome, he just needs to concentrate for a moment. Sometimes it's not what he expected but that just means that he is in a wild magic zone. Recently, his mentor Dame Sorsha, Knight of the Phoenix, explained very patiently the difference between magic and magic items. It was explained over two different adventures and it will probably need to be explained several times more.

Soon after he began his adventuring career, he killed his first demon single-handedly. He saw that these were unnatural evil creatures and devoted his life to their destruction. This gave him new purpose and probably resulted in his retaining a small portion of his sanity.

Instead he is now fanatically devoted to the destruction of all of demonkind. He recently declared, "I have killed more demons than I can count. My name is now Andrel Demonslayer!" Of course, he can't count past the number of fingers on each hand and he really can't remember how many demons he has killed but that doesn't make his achievements any less special for him.

Andrel is the pet of a wild cat named Stripes. He wasn't prepared for the independence of the feline race but he and Stripes are stuck with each other since Andrel is the only one that Stripes will allow to enter the same room as him. They share their home with Bertrum Sparks, a young boy who decided to choose Andrel to squire under. Andrel is an easy taskmaster; shine his armor, keep his daggers sharp, remind him of just about everything, well I guess that is a lot. Suffice to say that Bertrum is an easygoing, accepting young lad who will deserve sainthood for his patience when he is done.

Andrel is determined to be a Phoenix Knight and tries his hardest to impress. His favorite people to adventure with are Battleguard Drake Blackblade because he likes a good fight just as much as Andrel does, Dame Sorsha his mentor who has really good battle spells and gave him some nice stoneskins once, and Castigeer McLeod who can be counted on no matter where they end up.
