Lt. Col. Bertie Cunynghame DWYER

 

          
Bertie, at the Grand National in 1887, the highly competitive and elite Cresta Run at St Moritz competing with international athletes:  "Bertie Dwyer, an English boy of 14 staying at the Kulm, did the fastest time of the race, the only rider to break the two minute barrier with 1 minute 58.6 seconds . . . [A] truly remarkable effort for any rider let alone a 14 year old" (23 The Cresta Run 1885-1985).  

Record books note: "The first of the outstanding riders was Captain Dwyer, who in the 1890's won the Grand National twice and the Ashbourne Cup (sunsequently the CURZON CUP) twice. His principal rival was Gibson . . ." (1039 The Oxford Companion to Sports & Games, ed. John Arlott).

Bertie's uncle was on the first committee of the "newly formed St, Moritz Tobogganing Club. . .[they were] elected on a 17 November 1887 and consisted of Duke Grazioli, Major Dwyer (Bertie Dwyer's father) [error- his father was dead already, this is Major Lambert Dwyer] Mr Barker and Major W. H. Bulpett" (Cresta Run 28, Roger Gibbs 1985: London). 
On Jan 16 1897, Francis Curzon wrote: "'Luckily we had the best course of the meeting. Bertie Dwyer, of course, won'" (63). 
"In 1898-9. the redoubtable and immensely popular Bertie Dwyer steered the winning bob in the Fleetwood Wilson Cup . . ." (66).X

Caroline Georgina Thurlow CUNYNGHAME ,b 1847, "Milncrag, Ayr, Scotland" (but 1891 Census says she was born in Canada!and 1901 Census says: Montreal, Canada) daughter of Francis Thurlow Cunningham (CUNYNGHAME) and Hannah Carolina EYRN) d 21 December 1924   WEDDING: 8 June 1871, Milncrag, Ayr, Scotland
   She was connected to royal lineage, related to Gen. Sir Arthur Cunnynghame,(uncle)  who handed over supreme command of the British forces in southern Africa to Lt. Gen. Sir Frederic Thesiger. Robert was married but was not living with wife as of 1881 Census. In 1891 Census, at Portsea as head of home, with Bertie and Denys and Capt Lambert FW Dwyer visiting. She was at her son's wedding. Related to Lt Col Sir Percy Cunyghame who attended that wedding. In 1901 Census: Boarding St George Hanover Square, London- with her brother-in-law, Lambert Dwyer. She was widowed. They were not necessarily cohabitating, but one gets the idea they were close. Lambert gets around!!

LT in Boer War- slightly wounded at  Stinkhoutboom, 24/7/1900 while with 2nd Btn. Mentioned in despatches for his actions in South Africa.
Promoted Major 11-10-1910. Served with 1st Btn in Ireland 1912-1914.

Mentioned in the HISTORY OF THE 1ST & 2ND BATTALIONS THE LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT IN THE GREAT WAR by Wylly, H.C.  
"Mentioned as being with the 1st Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment in September 1912 when the battalion moved from Aldershot (England) to Fermoy (S. Ireland). At that time the Battalion was transferred from the 6th Infantry Brigade to the 16th Infantry Brigade, of the 6th Division. In October 1913 the British Infantry Regiment's underwent a re-organisation, and the number of
companies per battalion was reduced from 8 to 4. At that time Major Dwyer was Officer Commanding "C" Company, 1st Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment. Dwyer was not mentioned later in the book when the Battalion left to fight in France and Flanders, I can only presume that he was probably promoted and posted to another Regiment in 1914?" Beryl Maud GILLMAN m About 1907 - d 3 June 1910 Rutland House, Southsea, aged 20 (Notice in Times 6 June).  Have very detailed newspaper account of wedding.  This photo may be a nurse.
Note: Her sister was Evelyn Gillman, was a bridesmaid at Bertie's wedding. One of his groom men was a Lt. Burgess. The Lt and Evelyn were married- Their eldest was Guy Francis de Moncy BURGESS , yes the KGB double- spy. (Bertie's cousin)  History, or Hollywood has been kind to Burgess, since it seem that if one only avoids being boring, anything can be forgiven or overlooked.

Parents:   Major General Thomas Peard DWYER and Mary Ann TOULMIN  Single as of 1891 -Was staying as a visitor for Caroline Cunynghame Dwyer, Bertie and Denys in 1891 in Portsea. Biologicalfather of Hugh Dwyer- my grandfather. Committee member (founding) of the St Moritz Tobogganing Club, on 17 Nov 1877.   In 1901 Census: Boarding - with his sister-in-law- widowed -Caroline Cunynghame Dwyer-Newly discovered (2006) that Lambert was in The US, arriving in Boston of the Malta on 4 Jan 1873.

Emily Marie LAYE  b 11 September 1848, Douglas, IOM. bap   Illegitimate child =Lambert Dwyer and Emily Laye - married to his brother, William Dwyer. Appears to have been a long term affair- each chasing each other back and forth across Atlantic. Other children may be Lambert's - Only evidence for Hugh.  Her husband divorced her- changed his name in the 1880 census from William to Thomas. Hugh lists his father as "Lambert Dwyer" on his marriage certificate. Lambert visited America, and Emily staying with her sister in Scotland, not far from where Lambert was stationed- Hugh born there, in Edinburgh. Hugh used to receive money from a "Bertie Dwyer" at Christmas- a good amount.
Emily Remarried: to John PRINCE,  (b about 1858,  d at age of 32 at 314 Porter Street, Detroit 7 Dec 1890. Accidental overdose of chloroform administered during surgery) He was the grandson of Hon. Col John PRINCE, alleged illegitimate son of William IV of ENGLAND and an actress. (Most prob untrue - but he must have been an impressive person to have people think he could be). Emily is  my direct gg grandmother. She died 23 Aug 1896 in Detroit MI as "Mrs Emily Prince."
