Donkeys:
This is Rupert, one of my favourite donkeys at the Shelter. He is approximately 10 years old, and arrived at Shelter on 26th April 2003. It was clear to all of us that he had had little, or even no handling, and as far as we can tell, had never even had a head-halter put on him. Since his arrival, I have worked very closely with him; teaching him to stand quietly while he is groomed, to be led; basically getting him used to our routines. He was very scared and flighty in the beginning, but now we have got through to him, his beautiful nature has started to show through. And that beautiful black, velvety nose...
Cleo is another of my favourites. She is a lovely jenny in her mid-twenties. She came to the Shelter in 2000, after her owner used an axe to cut off her neglected, overgrown feet. As a result, she has badly deformed feet which require ongoing treatment. Despite her horrendous experience, she is a very friendly, sweet-natured donkey. Sally Also sadly had to be put down a couple of weeks ago. At 45 years old, she was our oldest donkey- her health had been deteriorating for some time, and it simply wasn't fair to keep her alive. Cleo, Katie, and other Shelter donkeys, are available for sponsorship at a minimum of AU$50.00 per year. However, donations of any amount are most welcome! For information on donations/sponsorship or for any other donkey information, please visit Diamond Creek Donkey Shelter, or come see us at the Shelter (Tuesday & Saturdays, 10am-2pm) at 139 Ironbark Road, Diamond Creek, Victoria (Melways ref: 12 J2).
LATEST SHELTER NEWS: We're pleased to announce the arrival of our foal, Noah, who was born on Sunday 30th November 2003. Mum Nina is a brilliant mother. The wee fella's doing very well, getting cheekier by the day, but we all love him!
We've now got our memorial garden up and running- each shelter donkey who has died has his or her own rose in the garden, along with a small memorial plaque. UPCOMING SHELTER EVENTS: Our next major event is our Photo Day, on Sunday, May 23rd, 2004. A full list of our events for 2004 can be found here.
