It's basically a story of two Junior High students and best friends, Yuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui, and how they encounter a mysterious book, THE FOUR GODS OF THE EARTH AND SKY, while at the library. The opening lines of the book explain that it is the legendary story of a young girl transported to a faraway land, and that it is also an incantation to make the story real. Once they read past the introduction. And so, before they could say, "Once upon a time," -BOOM-, welcome to the World of the Four Gods. There they met Tamahome and then, Yui was sent back to their world again, leaving Miaka in the Universe of the Four Gods. She then met Hotohori and Nuriko, and discovered that she was to be the Suzaku No Miko. Miaka eventually found her own way back to her own world, but it was then when Yui returned, and was raped. Blaming Miaka on everything, and coupled with her own love for Tamahome, she and Miaka then became enemies, and

Yui accepted her role as the Seiryuu No Miko. Then both quested out to collect the remaining Seishi...
