The OVAs (Original Animated Videos) are basically the continuation to the Fushigi Yuugi Saga. Apparently the actual anime only made it to about halfway of Yuu Watase's manga version. So to finish the story, they had to creat the OVAs.
The first OVA series never actually happened in the manga. They only created it to fix up the animator's little mistake. You see in the anime, Tamahome returns as Tamahome when he returned as Taka in the manga. So to fix it, they made this 3 episode story about how he became Taka, basically messing with Yuu Watase's story. But even though it wasn't something she wrote, the animator's did a fairly good job. They kept it fairly straight forward, and it was a little confusing at times but that's okay. Not like the actual anime wasn't confusing in it's own sense right?

Then came OVA II which was the actual continuation of Yuu Watase's story. It was comprised of 6 episodes (compared to the first OVA's set being 3) and hurried through the story. When the first half of Watase's manga equaled 52 episodes, the second only contained 6. Of course they skipped a lot of the manga's former content. But to make a long story short, OVA II had a beautifully sweet and smooth storyline with some surprising turns, and some more shocking revelations. Basically things that you've come to love in the anime. And the conclusion is something that would make the entire world happy. At least, those who've watched the anime.
