Modifying a TLC J7

One of my visitors requested a guide on what's possible on a LandCruiser 75 regarding what he called "tuning"; how big wheels, what winches and what suspensionwork had to be done to make the larger wheels fit. Instead of making long tables over what is possible and not, I'll show you two examples, a TLC 75 and a TLC 79.
Everything about the 75 is based on a article from the July 2000 issue in the german 4x4 magazine 4WheelFun. Everything about the TLC79 is based on a article from the August 2001 issue of Gelndewagenmagazin.

This nice car has everyhing one could wish for serious long term travelling. For example a Webasto heater, a 180l aux. tank, two sparewheels, GPS and a Sony HiFi system!
To carry the two sparewheels he uses a Kaymar bumper with two swing-away sparewheelcarriers. To carry the winch, the aux. lamps and to protect the front of the car he has mounted a ARB bullbar. The winch is a WARN M12000. The car also has a Safari Turbo (150 hp) and a raised air-intake.
Like any serious mountainman can tell you, one of the most important things are the shoes, and this also goes for cars, on-road or off-road. This Land Cruiser is equipped with 33x12,5 inch BF GoodRich MT's on 15 inch chromespoke wheels. To make room for the tires a OldManEmu (OME) kit was ordered, lifting the car 75mm (about 3 inches).

The Land Cruiser 79

This tough pickup is owned by a ranger in the southern parts of Germany. After ruining car after car in the woods, he finally found the rigth vehicle, a Land Cruiser 79. In order to fully fit his requirements, a few things were added/changed.
To increase groundclearance a new set of tires was bought. 285/75/R16 tires on 7x16 Toyota wheels gave 255mm (10 inches) of ground clearance. To make room for the tires and to increase axle articulation a heavy-duty OME kit was installed, giving a body lift of 50mm (2 inches).
Behind the ARB bull-bar a WARN 9000i winch is fitted.
