What is Landcare?

The term "Landcare" is most frequently used to mean a network of people who are working towards sustainable natural resource management that is, managing soil, water, and vegetation so they are available for use in the future.

Landcare groups are formed by people with a common concern about the quality of the land and water in their local area. Landcare groups undertake a wide range of activities including on-ground works, research, education and community awareness. Landcare groups also provide a valuable social network.

Yeppoon community groups learned to use cost effective global communications, as a result of a Queensland government grant

The Community Skills Development Program in Information Technology made the grant to Capricorn Coast Landcare to train locals in Internet skills and allow them to maintain and expand websites.

The project was open to members of community groups who want to learn basic Internet skills: email, research the Internet, basic web site construction and establishing news groups

"This program took the fear out of computers" Alby Wooler, President of Landcare said

"Once you take the blinkers off, it opens up the world," he said

By building community skills in information technology, community groups in small towns will be able to use free software to link up more effectively and share information. They will be able to engage in lifelong learning to empower and enhance their communications.

The project is being staged by Central Queensland University's ejournalism centre (http://www.ejournalism.au.com.) at the Learning Network Queensland Centre on the Capricorn Coast.

Funding for development of LivingIT was provided to Landcare by the Queensland government

The Capricorn Coast Landcare Group is a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers from diverse backgrounds who care for our land and water on the Caprciron Coast. WE have members from our urban and rural environments who assist to educate our community on more sustainable land management practices and implement on-ground action to tackle land degradation.

So not only do we spread the word about Landcare, we also get out there and do something for the good of community and the environment! For instance our projects include:

Salinity Project on Hedlow Creek

Olympic Landcare at Emu Park

Junior Landcare

Central Queensland Arbor Day Programme

Living IT

Envirolink Project
