TEACHINGS

SINGING

          "LORD,TEACH ME TO SING!"

TEXT Eph 5:18-20-And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess;but be filled with the
Spirit;{19}Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and
making melody in your heart to the Lord;{20}Giving thanks always for all things unto
     God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Col 3:16-Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;teaching and
admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in
     your hearts to the Lord.

    INTRO:

Can you imagine a world without songs? What kind of world would it be if there were no
singing? People sing for a number of reasons.

Several years ago a pastor stayed overnight at the home of a young couple. He was
awakened the next morning by a soprano voice singing,Nearer,My God to Thee.At
breakfast he mentioned to his hostess how pleased he was to hear that lovely old hymn,
but that it seemed to go much faster than he had ever heard it sung before."Oh,"replied
the hostess,"I guess that's because I wasn't paying too much attention to the words. You
see,it's a good song my mother used to sing, and I've found that it's a good one to boil
eggs by.Just repeat the first verse five times rapidly for soft-boiled,and eight times for
     hard-boiled.

We are to teach and admonish one another by psalms and hymns and spiritual songs(Col.
3:16).To do this,we must be thoughtful and sing from the heart.Otherwise we will not
be pleasing the Lord, nor will we be able to communicate the message to others
effectively.Let's examine the texts of our songs and see whether we really mean what we
sing. The Lord is pleased and honored when we express His praises sincerely and with
     spiritual understanding.

Perhaps you are not aware that the lines and titles from some familiar hymns can mean
more than you think. The following ones might cheer you up today:

     "A Charge To Keep I Have"--for Shopaholics
"And Can It Be That I Should Gain"--for Chocoholics
     "Awake,My Soul,Stretch Every Nerve"--for Caffeineaholics
"My Faith Has Found A Resting Place"--for Couch Potatoes
     "Every Day,Every Hour"--for Type "A"Personalities

In one article titled "Remedy for a Prune Face",the writer said,"Ladies,do you want to
stay young? Then join a church choir.Women who sing stay younger-looking.A singer's
cheek muscles are so well developed by exercise that her face will not wrinkle as soon as
     the nonsinger."

Now,I'm not suggesting that you immediately call the music director and ask to join the
choir. For some of us,this might improve our facial expression, but seriously damage the
harmony of the choir. What I am proposing is that all Christians should sing to the Lord,
whether they are choir members or not.Singing reflects a happy heart, and a "Merry heart
makes a cheerful countenance".No matter if we sing audibly in "psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs"(Eph.5:19)or silently,we should be continuously praising Him.

IWE HAVE A SONG TO SING!

A.Being free means you REALIZE that you are free!

ILL.-It was time for a bear in the Heidelberg zoo to be released into a beautiful
sanctuary for bears. All the bear knew was pacing back and forth in a 6'x 10'cage
all his life and people was wondering how the bear would respond to his new
found freedom. The day came when he was to be released.Reporters had gathered
as well as others to witness the occasion. The door was lifted. The bear looked at
the opening for a moment, and then began his ritualistic pacing 5 steps forward,5
steps back.Embarrassed, the zoo keepers tried to coax the bear out but with no
success. Finally, someone suggested to use fire and scare him out of his cage.As
this was applied, the bear leaped out of his cage, confused and dazed. When he got
his senses back, standing in the open field with trees, ponds of fish, and other bears
for fellowship,he started his 5 step pacing. You see the bears prison was not
METAL but MENTAL.Jesus set you free 2000 years ago.But the reason many
are not LIVING free is because they have not REALIZED their freedom in Jesus!

Psa 28:7-The LORD is my strength and my shield;my heart trusted in him,and I am
helped:therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth;and with my song will I praise him.

Psa 33:3-Sing unto him a new song;play skilfully with a loud noise.

     B.YOUR SONG IS:

          1.PERSONAL!
          2.PRECIOUS!
          3.POWERFUL!

Psa 40:3-And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God:many
shall see it,and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

Psa 69:30-I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with
     thanksgiving.

Psa 96:1-O sing unto the LORD a new song:sing unto the LORD,all the earth.

Psa 98:1-A Psalm.O sing unto the LORD a new song;for he hath done marvellous
things:his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

Psa 144:9-I will sing a new song unto thee,O God:upon a psaltery and an instrument
of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.

Psa 149:1-Praise ye the LORD.Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the
     congregation of saints.

II.WE HAVE A TIME TO SING!

Psa 42:8-Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the
night his song shall be with me,and my prayer unto the God of my life.

         (Who?)(How?)(What?)(When?)
Psa 77:6-I call to remembrance my song in the night:I commune with mine own heart:
and my spirit made diligent search.

Acts 16:25-And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God:and the
     prisoners heard them.

1 Sam 16:23-And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that
David took an harp, and played with his hand:so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and
the evil spirit departed from him.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF MUSIC!

III.WE HAVE A JOY TO SING!

Psa 118:14-The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

Isa 12:2-Behold,God is my salvation;I will trust, and not be afraid:for the LORD
JEHOVAH is my strength and my song;he also is become my salvation.

CONCLUSION:

Our days should be filled with singing! We have been given a song to sing;we should sing
all the time and especially in the midnight hour;we have a joy to sing,an anointing to sing
for the glory of God.God sent me by today to ask you, what happened to your song?
     LORD,TEACH ME TO SING!
