   MY        FAMILY        HISTORY
WHY WERE THEY THERE?
My family have nearly all been miners of one kind or another. The majority came from the Black Country region of the  West Midlands of England.

This area was a 'melting pot' for the regions of the British Isles. With people migrating to find work during the 18th and 19th centuries from WALES, IRELAND and SCOTLAND.  Joining the 'mele' of agricultural populace from the rural areas of SHROPSHIRE, HEREFORDSHIRE, DERBYSHIRE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, YORKSHIRE and LANCASHIRE.

This migration was brought about by the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION which took place during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Agricultural workers left their work and homes by the droves.
With the commencement of the 'Enclosure Movement' agricultural workers began to lose their jobs and with the promise of better wages in the 'new' towns that were beginning to bloom they moved into the industrial areas of the West Midlands and Lancashire.
