The Unholy Trinity
Sir Guy of Gisburne
Sheriff of Nottingham
Robert de Rainault: (Sheriff of Nottingham) The Sheriff is in a way responsible for the outlaws, because he killed Robin's father, thus setting the events in motion.  The Sheriff once described his job as that of a glorified desk clerk, and this seems a fairly reasonable description, because while the Sheriff is concerned with how to collect taxes from the rebellious serfs, he leaves the policework to Guy of Gisburne...
Sir Guy of Gisburne: (Sheriff's right-hand man) Guy is cruel, ruthless, and extremely vain.  Thank God for that, say the outlaws, because his firm belief in his absolute supremacy (and short fuse) often leads him to make stupid mistakes. Guy is actually Robert of Huntingdon's half-brother. Guy's mother having thought her husband (Lord of Gisburne) was dead, married Lord of Huntingdon secretly.  Well, to make a long story short, Lord of Gisburne was NOT dead, and Lady Gisburne had no choice but to go back to him. He was exceptionally cruel, and since Guy was not his, was even nastier to him.  So Gisburne has only his step-father to thank for his killer instinct.
Abbot Hugo de Rainault: The Abbot is the Sheriff's brother, and they are certainly two of a kind.  Corrupt, cruel and power-hungry.  As he sends Gisburne off to escort Marion to Kirklees Abbey, he says, and I quote: "May God's peace go with you. Don't take any prisoners." What a wonderful clergyman, eh?  His main reason for shipping Marion off to Kirklees is to take her land.  And when the evil Simon de Belleme wants her, his only reason for denying him is one and the same.  "What, and lose 400 acres?" To which the Sheriff replied: "Why are you men of God so damned acquisative?" The Abbot is your run of the mill  clergyman, warning Gisburne not to go after Herne: ". . . as long as they come to mass, have their children baptised, are married and buried as Christians, I'm not too bothered what they get up to. You leave well alone, Gisburne, or you may find the old Gods are not as dead as you think."
