The Mummy is my new favorite film, which is rather ironic, because I fought seeing it tooth and nail. I've always liked Brendan Fraser, but hated horror flicks. I'd managed to avoid it while it was in theaters, even though one of my good friends saw it and said it was good. If she'd given me a little more information on WHY she thought it was good, I might have caved in. But all she said was, "I liked it, and Brendan Fraser was really cute!"
Well, I couldn't argue with her there, but I didn't think even Brendan Fraser was worth being scared out of my mind.
Months passed, and The Mummy came out on video. Still I shied away. However, one night when I was out to rent movies, there was nothing of any interest to me there. So I sighed, picked up the film, and said, "I guess it's inevitable. I do like Brendan Fraser, and I can always turn it off if it bothers me too much."
So I took it home and anxiously sat through the previews (for other horror films, including Wes Craven films) and I thought, "Oh my GOD what have I gotten myself into?"
The truth is, The Mummy really ISN'T scary - not in the typical horror fashion anyway. The scariest part for me was when Evy fell off the ladder in the library (as I'm deathly afraid of heights). What it is is action, rather reminiscent of Indiana Jones, in fact. There are some really creepy things in it (especially if you don't like bugs) but it's just a great, fast-paced and witty film. If you haven't seen it yet, I strongly urge you to. It's well worth the rental fee.
